What techniques and styles do you use to write?
How do you write? On days like today [I wrote this manuscript on Sunday morning], I’m lucky enough to be old fashioned about things, doing it in a most analog way. But less literally, how do you write? What steps does your brain dance when you’re putting pen to paper or tapping on your keyboard?
I try to write conversationally, myself. I imagine I am speaking to someone I hold in good regard, someone I’m telling about something they are interested in. Once I can dig this canal of imaginary dialog, words flow like water.
My technique is certainly shaped by my medium, though. What you’re reading here should be my 852nd published work on this blog site, and that has led me to write extensively in hypertext. (How Web 1.0 of me to use that term.) That basically means that hyperlinks to other works around the internet are as much a part of my toolbox as mere letters and punctuations.
So, I guess I visualize my written pieces as one-way conversations with use and abuse of a technology that became de rigueur long ago.
How do you write? You could just leave a comment (Disqus sucks though) or you could write your long form reply an an article (hopefully linked back here) – Writinghood is way in style these days.
