It may be true that not everyone who wants to write will be great writers. If there is however, even the smallest chance of becoming even close to good, I suppose a great many would give a fortune to know the secret.
The so called secrets of a good writer are simple lessons learned from experience.
Do not grab a pen and a piece of paper immediately if your goal is to become a good writer. Your first step should be to grab a good book or several good books for that matter. It would also help if you read a bit from every genre, type, classification or category. Read a little from the classics, from the contemporary, from non-fiction, from science fiction and even from fantasy. This will not only broaden your horizons but will allow you to get a taste of different writing styles.
Psychology tells us that modeling is an important part of learning. This doesn’t mean that we should copy writing styles of accomplished masters. It simply means that we should look at them to be able to recognize what good writing is about.
Reading is not enough. You also need to be able to write correctly. You are supposed to learn to do so in grammar class. It may however, be somewhat confusing studying grammar in school. This is not to say though that grammar teachers have nothing good to teach. On the contrary, the best of them are great authorities in their field. The fact stands though that not many of us leave school with perfect grammar.
This may be because time was simply not enough to learn everything or we were taught so much we ended up confused. The best solution to improve one’s command of the English language is to continue studying and reading about grammatical rules on one’s own time and pace.
Aside from polishing your grammar, you also have the responsibility to keep updated. Keep your eyes and ears open for world events. Being aware of the present world will give you the material for future writing projects.
You also need to update yourself on new trends and developments in the art of writing. Keep abreast of emerging genres and influential modern writers who have their own distinctive styles to share.
There was a time when there was a need for elaborate and complicated words and expressions. In today’s world, many readers prefer simple terms and structures. Practice being simple in the way you write. This is the best way to relate with your readers.
The last and best tip of all is an exercise on repetition. Scribble your thoughts as regularly as possible as you go on your merry way devouring those books. Do not believe at any point in your life that you are already good enough. Nobody is good enough because writing is a dynamic art. Even the masters have room for improvement.
