Writing is a career and you have to learn to treat it like one.
If you are here, you have probably wondered if you have what it takes to be a writer. If you want to be successful writer, there are several writing tips that you need to “make” your own.
Tools of the Trade
As a carpenter uses a hammer, either a manual one or a power one, to join together pieces of lumber to build a house or cabinet, so must a writer use a pen, a computer or even a typewriter to join together words to write a novel or an article.
I have written with a pen, a typewriter and a computer – each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. My favorite is the last.
Using a computer may take away some of the mystique of being a writer – the mystique associated with taking a piece of blank typing paper, rolling into a typewriter and listening to the keys clacking against the platen. When you finished a page, you could feel a sense of accomplishment as you flipped it over and stacked it on top of the other finished pages. The only thing I disliked is that the typewriter made rewriting difficult.
I will admit that I enjoy a computer even more than a typewriter and even more than a pen. Revisions are a snap. It is much easier to organize your work, and more importantly, reorganize your work. The best part about using a computer is that I can now email a manuscript to a publisher or I can publish it on my own.
Just think about how easy it was for me to submit this article and have it published.
One final note, have you ever met a carpenter who has a ruler or tape measure in his pocket? He is always ready to do a job. Technology has come so far in the last 10 years, that writers can now carry their own pocket tools, such as a PDA or a Smart Phone. The next time you get an idea, you will be ready to do your job.
