Writing Tips for Publication From an Editor

I have edited several books, articles, and short stories. Here are some tips for those who want to have their work published.

Most writers want to have their work published. If you do, then you need to follow these basic tips.

Follow the guidelines set out by the client. If double spacing is required, then double space.

Avoid incomplete and run on sentences. Some sentences don’t have all of the ingredients necessary, such as a noun and a verb.  Other sentences are one paragraph long. This is too long.

Capitalize the first word in a sentence.

Don’t use incorrect punctuation marks.

Spell check your work. It takes only a few minutes to use spell check.

Use proper tense.  If you are writing in third person, then use that tense all through your work.

Check your facts. If you use a source, cite it. Give credit to those you quote.

Always check to see if there are guidelines for submission. These are the road map which you must follow to offer your piece for publication.

If you are writing for a particular client, read some of the articles that have been accepted by that client. If it is a magazine, look over the magazine and see what content they purchase.

If you receive a critique from the source, accept it graciously and constructively. If you are asked to edit a piece, then use your judgment if you want to do it or decline publication.

Educate yourself by studying writing books or taking a creative writing course.
