"A man is not respected in his home land"
Since resigning my position as head of a corporate department, my husband has lovingly agreed to my staying home and writing. I freelance my services and I am told I am slightly above average for what I do. I write. I wrote in high school, I wrote in college( for the short time I was there). Marriage and children came along, I stopped writing.
Now, I am free to write again, and every now and then, I might write a an article and send it to my two daughters to read. After it is published, I send them the link. I have done this twice in the past 30 days and when I inquire how they liked the article, they say “cute”. Okay, cute is good, but can you give me more. They will go on about how I always find good articles on the internet to share. Share? I wrote it! Next is what really gets my goat..”OMG, you wrote that, we thought it was some professional who wrote it.” This is a statement they have made on both occasions.
In my family respect is hard to come by. No one respects a writer. People pay me to write for them, isn’t that a professional writer? Websites pay me for every person who reads my articles. Doesn’t that make me a professional writer? No, to them I am “MOM” playing all day on the computer, just enjoying life. They don’t realize how much work there is involved in writing an article either for a client or myself. I am telling you, no respect at all!
You just wait till I publish this e-book and it goes viral. Yeah, just wait when they beg me to take them to St. Martaan on vacation. I’ll just shake my head no, and off the husband, grandchildren, and I will go with our roller bags behind us. Yeah, they’ll see who is a professional then and I will finally get some respect!

I respect your writing ability and admire it.
Sometimes family is too close to see or appreciate it. I am good at what I do as a prime income and yet my family will ask others opinions that relate to my expertise as I have no idea.

You are right, people don’t realize that writing is a job like any other.

Lol, you are so right. I don’t think my son has read any of my work, I’ve given up sending him links. My sister has always read the occasional ones I send links of and my brother has just discovered his little sister can write.

Such true words. It is at least good that as writers together we understand how tough it is and can console each other. I am glad you wrote this Adrn. Thank you for sharing so we could all share.
