Writing online articles is good business. The following tips target those who would like to improve their earning ability from writing. While many writers tend to republish entries, experience shows that republishing entries is penalized by search engines and does not contribute much to earnings.
Writing articles can be very fulfilling but earning from writing requires more than putting words on paper. It requires more than quality writing, clever sentence construction, and excellent language use. The following tips will improve your earnings.
Identify topics that sell – Let no one cheat you that you can get awesome views from almost any topic. Some topics sell more than others and while I do write fiction and poetry, these two will not give you anything online. Nobody has the time to read an entire novel online. Short stories are unpopular unless very short. Poetry may get views but the quality of those clicks remains very poor.
Increase the quantity of your writing – I will repeat this till the lights go out. Nobody earns anything by writing one quality article every month or even every week. To paraphrase advice that I gave young writers in the past, newspapers have greater circulation and earn more revenues because they appear daily! Try to write at least an article everyday if you want to earn anything significant.
Avoid paraphrasing news – Some articles are simply timeless. Avoid paraphrasing the news just because it is hot at the moment. You may get many clicks the day after but such popularity isn’t long lasting. Sometimes the publisher may also delay publication making your entry irrelevant altogether. If you come up with a newsworthy article, convert it into a feature article with timeless quality.
Venture out of your comfort zone – You may be very good at writing articles of a particular type but sometimes it pays to move away from these usual topics and write on something different once in a while. This will make you identify what is popular as opposed to what you understand well.
Search and research – The reason why we have search engines is to help you when it comes to the unknown. None of us knows everything. Even those who studied medicine in college have holes in their knowledge that need to be plugged. Search for writing topics, research into what remains unknown to you in order to boost views, and for goodness sake, read, read and read some more!
Try to market your writing – You heard me. Marketing means reading and commenting on your friend’s work, sharing your entries on social networking sites, and also writing good quality entries that will make your readers want to come for more. Facebook, Digg and Stumbleupon may not give you much but every click counts when it comes to online writing.
Have catchy titles – Nobody goes onto the internet to look for the lackluster and mediocre stuff unless they find it either useful or attractive. Make your titles as appealing as possible. They are like book covers together with that summary that appears at the top. Long titles containing at least two keywords work better than shorter ones.
While many online writers have the tendency to write a few articles and republish the same on more than two or three sites, my experience reveals that this does not boost earnings. Search engines seem to be punishing this behavior by sending duplicate content to page 300 or even 3000 plus of the search results. If you want to write for more than one site, make the content unique.
The article per day advice, along with the clever newspaper comparison, rings loud for me. Getting away from stories and poems is an interesting idea too. Well written.
Kinda stop doing news article as even though it may give one a few hundred views in one day, the view count would eventually die out till nothing happens at all. Same goes for poetry and short stories, which would fare better by being published in a collection, I think. A well written article here.
Great share. very informative article. Thanks for sharing this tips my friend.
…Just added, I’ve experienced that received 45,000 views in one day. My article was published on Reddit that sent via DrJulianBashir (The most top Redditor on Reddit). He was very useful guy! Honestly, I don’t know him. Hi did picked randomly any interesting and “QUALITY’ articles, then post it to Reddit. If your articles chosen by him, then you’re lucky and received ‘rocket views’. ..usually he will comeback/ monitoring to your Blog again .checked on this below URL http://eo.reddit.com/r/science/comments/bw8ol/the_thickness_of_the_earths_crust_ranges_from_50/
..thus, share your article everywhere including amplify/ Clipmarks, FF, etc. etc we won’t know, someone will post it on top site.
Useful tips…I usually stick on with writing poetry as my favourite style of writing.
Haven’t been commenting much of late but am getting back to the trend of it. It does help boost viewership…
Marketing your works does help a lot. Would recommend Twitter to the list as that is the in thing right now…
My wife is much better than me at picking good topics, I myself enjoy writting what I want to write about and if its not fun I just cannot get into it. As such I admit I may be missing out on some things, but really want to say what I want to say.
Very true and practical tips. Your words just motivate every writer Jimmy. True that we should Never ever underestimate the power of search engines in identifying plagiarism, and never underestimate the audience’s intelligence (catchy titles). Thank you very much for excellent tips
Thank you for all this valuable advice. I have tried writing articles many times but they don’t hold the appeal for me that writing poetry does, so I shall just have to be satisfied with that.
Thanks for the tips. I’m kind of new to writing. I wrote an eulogy to my dad and emailed it to Jennifer and she said it was good. I figure that since when she was in college she was an English major, I could trust her! If you haven’t been able to tell, I talk as much as my mom and Jennifer!
