Freelance writing from home is an ecological choice.
Freelance writing from home is a greener and more economical choice to make. We have the option of not having to purchase new office clothes, or commute with a bus or car. Most web sites I write for offer an online and mail option of keeping track of how much you earn. This feature limits consumption with paper trails and junk mail delivered to your home. Here are some other tips and ideas to keep freelance writing from home as green as possible.
Some writers prefer to write on paper first, such as myself most of the time. Only use recycled paper, and limit consumption if possible. Use both sides of the paper. If the articles fit on one page, consider placing two articles on one piece of paper if you are printing them to keep to either showcase in a portfolio, or for personal use.
When the computer is not in use, shut it down. By shutting down the computer you are contributing to the environment. Sitting at a computer trying to find your muse while the computer is running but not being used, is not effective carbon busting.
Write your story or article ideas on recycled or scrap paper about to be thrown out in the recycle bin. This prevents sitting at the computer trying to find your muse.
If you are converting a part of your home into an office to write in, consider purchasing your items at second hand stores first. Salvation Armies, The Good Will, or Value Village have wonderful desks, bins and file cabinets. Freecycle is also another option of a second hand idea.
Since you are home, you can cut back on the heat and hydro. Wear warmer clothing, and only have the light on where you are working.
Writing for the web is an environmental choice. It limits paper in magazines. Unless the magazine or paper you write for is using recycled products, web content is greener. Research the paper magazines first, and ask if they participate with recycled products, and take it a step further and ask whether they use soya ink in the printing process.
Writing from home gives you so many green options; I only listed a few to get you started. Working from home can make such an environmental impact and worth pursuing.
