Writing articles can be tricky. Many young writers are unable to balance between the quality and quantity of what they write and this has frustrated their ability to earn anything worth writing home about from their online writing. There is a need to balance between quality and quantity for while quality is important, the quantity of writing is certainly everything.
Just how much are you writing? Do you sometimes call yourself a writer without doing the actual writing? Are you more comfortable calling yourself a writer when you spend half a month moaning about a writer’s block only to write one lackluster piece and disappear again? It’s time you call off the bluff and get down to business.
Compare the circulation of daily newspapers and monthly magazines
If you are one of those online writers whose blog is updated once a year or even once a month, or any one of those writers who produce an article a month in the name of quality, its time you upped the stakes by increasing your circulation by increasing your out put. The more online content you produce the more the clicks, and that is a little more money for you. You may not be writing for money, but again, why post it to a paying site if the money doesn’t matter?
More content means more advertisement revenue
The more content you write, the higher the revenue generated from adverts displayed alongside your content. Do not believe for one second that a writer with one or two articles a month however good can match one who produces 60 articles a month in terms of revenue generation. As much as the quality of online writing matters a lot, it’s sometimes about generating revenue from those ads and the more the pages, the more the ads, meaning more revenue.
The more one writes, the better they become
I have said it time and again and will repeat it. A writer worth his salt should never let a day pass without writing at least 300 words. Writing frequently generates what psychologists call learning by imprinting. We perfect any actions that we do many more times and writing is no different. If you want to rust and forget all the stylistic and language factors at your disposal, then hide behind the curtain of a writers block. The more you write, the better you become at beating a writer’s block.
Online articles are not books
Do not spend two weeks or two months on researching and writing an online article that will give you 1 dollar a month or even less in the name of quality. The same two weeks can easily produce an e-book that will fetch much more on the market irrespective of the quality. The desire to produce quality work must not block the need to get value for your time and efforts.
Writing is about 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration
You don’t need to be inspired all the time to write quality stuff. Writing is 1% inspiration while the rest is perspiration. I don’t remember who said those words but it remains true to this day. When you are inspired, your mind can offer up to a dozen ideas. Write these down in a notebook or journal and use them later own (perspiration) when inspiration evaporates or dies, that is how I manage to write at least two articles a day in addition to a blog entry. There are times when I have ideas for ten or more articles but notice how stupid it would be to write all of them in a single day.
Don’t let quantity be an excuse for poor quality
Some writers will want us to believe that the larger the quantity the poor the quality. I don’t think so. Quantity should never be an excuse for poor quality. Let us do some simple mathematics.
An average typist can key in 50 words per minute. A slower one like me does between 30 and 40 words per minute and that means I can type a 400 word article in 10 minutes! If I am to do some thinking along the way, I would require an additional 20 minutes and another 20 minutes for proofreading. If this were to be researched into, I would need a couple of hours for the research bit giving a total of three hours. What would stop me from writing one well researched entry everyday out of the 24 hours that my day has?
Quality is important but quantity is everything
Nothing beats quality for it ensures repeat sales and for online writing, it ensures that your readers come back for more. Think of the daily telegraph disappearing for more than a month and coming back then disappearing again. How many readers would be willing to wait amid this inconsistency? Think of a shop that opens today, closes tomorrow and opens again after a week. How much business can the poor fellow do? You have to balance between the quality of what you write and the quantity.

HATS Off ! Leo
August 11th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
I agree quite a bit, but there is little point in churning out dozens of articles a week if they are boring, worthless and waste of e-space!
Writing quality is quintessential and ideally you should be writing tens of articles a month that are good stuff. The number of people who do that htough are very few like you and Val Mills. People like me tend to write good to very good articles, but quite infrequently because I cant write for the sake of writing.
Nevertheless, great article, as all yours are!
August 11th, 2010 at 7:01 pm
very good entry here. =)
August 11th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Great article.
August 11th, 2010 at 9:04 pm
Great advice. I am pretty sure it was Thomas Edison who said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration
August 11th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
It is possible for quality and quantity going parallel together and you’re the living sample. Thanks for sharing.
August 11th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
All I can say is ouch.
August 11th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Wish I could find a way to balance the time for both homework and online writing… Came across a writer here who kinda writes a lot every day, with a goal of a thousand articles in mind. Wonder how much one could earn with a thousand well-crafted articles?
August 11th, 2010 at 9:47 pm
Great post……Keep going.
August 11th, 2010 at 10:51 pm
I like this post very much.
I will preserve this article, because this best form of advice and

August 12th, 2010 at 12:31 am
Yes maintaining both quality and quantity is key to good writing. Its a good share from you.
August 12th, 2010 at 2:10 am
Agreeing with you. Quantity depends on the topic and amount of research.
August 12th, 2010 at 6:17 am
Ur rigth. Nice tips.
August 12th, 2010 at 9:02 am
Great article Leo. You are right, of course.
August 12th, 2010 at 9:28 am
thanks Shilaho for your great advice to us, really appreciate… but I find that quality beats quantity. If I can write like the way you do, I will definitely write a lot everyday, at my fingertips. I don’t like to write a lot of articles but people find them boring pr think they are just nonsense, but comment due to obligation, if this goes on, we usually will not enjoy writing or reading. For my case, I usually write poems, short stories, jokes, riddles, unlike those informative articles whereby Triond or non-Triond members may still search for them and read them later. Certain topics really need inspiration, not that we can just write freely as long we have the knowledge, but certain topic really come to our head when we really encounter them or heard from people around us, then we can just write them naturally.
August 12th, 2010 at 10:13 am
Thanks for the DESCENT read Leo Tolstoy.
The article was very well written, despite the view it conveys. Above I saw the reply by Journalist Marlene \’I am pretty sure it was Thomas Edison who said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration\’ and yes it was an Edison quote!
Let me remind everyone who quotes anything by Edison that Edison was despite being a prolific inventor, a fool who didn’t posses 1% of the genius of the Serb immigrant that worked for him, Nikola Tesla. He was so stuck up upon his notion of quantity over actual genius, that he didn’t see the absolute genius of Tesla\’s alternating current. You see all of Edison’s perspiration couldn’t compete with Tesla\’s ability as a mechanical and electrical engineer! It was easy for a fool to say that ‘genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration’ for he was as far removed from being genius as one could be, whilst his competitor helped revolutionise the world! After all it does take a genius to know one, and it was obvious that Edison saw himself as a hard worker, not a genius, like the great Nikola Tesla. It’s just food for thought.
Top read Leo!
August 12th, 2010 at 10:30 am
Some very good points. although quality is still essential.
August 12th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
This is great advice for writers to think about when writing something substantial. You are always on the money with your advice.
August 12th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Great share of knowledge, thanks
August 12th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
I tend to an opposing opinion, though I would go as far as calling it the case of ‘horse and carriage’; I think ‘balance’ is the key word in this article.
Good one to get people thinking for themselves anytime, though
August 12th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
Great article. Nice tips.
August 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
To Silent Wasp: it’s very interesting what you’re writing about Edison (didn’t know that), but I suppose we’re not talking about “revolutionary” writing, about competing with Dostoevsky or Jack London, but something more “material” – writing for an daily income, writing as a side business, writing for “clicks” etc. I mean, it’s all about setting goals and defining them – if I call myself “the Big Writer” then yes, I should write, rewrite and rewrite once more (by the way, did you know that Lev Tolstoy rewrote “War and Peace” eight times?). But I’m a mere “blogger” with my unique contribution to the world, nonetheless, still in the process of self search- this is why I agree with what Leo wrote here. Especially with the “write 300 words every day”. I used to learn piano when I was a child – and this is exactly the same – if you want to be able to play, write, run – whatever – practice! (even if you’re a genius, can’t run away from some drill)
I cannot help but mention my favorite quote by Jim Ryun: “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
August 12th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
I thought this was a very good read…
August 12th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Agreed. Make a perfect balance between quality and quantity and you will be exceptionally successful.
August 12th, 2010 at 6:30 pm
Leo, you are teaching us good writing habits in spite of ourselves. thank you.
August 12th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Actually, Thomas Edison said that genius is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration, not 99% and 1%. Inspiration is pretty important too!
August 12th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
Inspiration is wonderful but sometimes we just have to plunge ahead and hope it works. I agree with you, Leo. You are an inspiration for writers on triond.
August 12th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
I’m going to take the opposite side of the fence on this one, Leo. When you work from 7:00 am to 9:00-10:00 pm at night 7 days a week, there just isn’t any time left in the day for quantity.
My clients come first. Yes, I agree with your article that you should write more; however, I write when I can and make quality my strong point. That’s what Borlok Virtual Assistants is all about — quality. That’s where we’ve gotten more clients because they appreciate our quality.
August 12th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Quality and quantity go hand-in-hand.
August 13th, 2010 at 12:28 am
Output depends on competition, I feel . If you live in a rich nation where life’s easy, say Australia and New Zealand, the culture is lazier as their are less incentives to, “go hard or starve.”
Thank ` you for the great insights .

Well written. I agree with most of the points mentioned.

Really love this article, what about writing E-books?
August 13th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
My hats off to you, Leo for your great commitment in this field. And yeah…I’m back with a bang after few months as my mom was hospitalised.
August 13th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Fantastic article, I’ve learned a lot from this, thank you.
August 13th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
This is a wonderful contribution and I agree with you, although I do prefer quality written articles over mindless pap just to get a lot of articles up. Thanks so much for your contributions that I love to read and best wishes from me!
August 14th, 2010 at 12:33 am
Thanks for this article. I agree that you want to get some kind of income quantity is very important.
August 14th, 2010 at 4:18 am
very true indeed !
August 14th, 2010 at 2:03 pm
That was such a wonderful lesson for writers like me. excellent and thank You
August 14th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Very good advice for aspiring authors, well written piece….
August 14th, 2010 at 2:54 pm
Good writeup. But I think, quality makes people want to read what you write next, not how many trash you dish out on hourly basis…
August 14th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
Great article and great tips. Thanks.
August 14th, 2010 at 6:35 pm
Great advice. I write something every day, just to keep my brain in motion.
August 14th, 2010 at 7:24 pm
Thanks for the great lesson.
August 14th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Great article – well written and a needed wake call for me – I will write more!
August 14th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
Great points! I’m not one to start writing BS articles for the sake of clicks, but I am certainly writing more each day. Good share.
August 14th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
It’s a challenge to all, and it takes discipline to be consistent with the writing habit. Very good tips!

Great advice. It boils down to how much do you want to earn.
August 15th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
I think it is a combination of both. Writing 50 bad articles a day is just as bad as writing only 1 good article a month.
August 15th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
I agree with the advice that you need to write and write because with practice you improve. But that doesn’t mean you need to post everything you write.
August 15th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Thank you for sharing this. As always with your articles, the information above was extremely beneficial to me. As a budding writer I really do suffer from the quality/quantity dilemma and this has helped me see the straight facts of it. Hopefully my productivity will skyrocket because of these pointers. =)

First, Hello everyone! I’m new to this establishment.
Hi, Leo,
Yours is the first article I read soon after joining Triond.com. You’ve put the essence of the not-yet-established article-writer’s conundrum in a succint way. Good writing!

August 16th, 2010 at 8:17 am
hallo very cool
August 16th, 2010 at 8:51 am
Five days ago I would have agreed with the more-content part. However, since I developed this sudden obsession with the English Grammar, well, it’s safe to say I’m never going back to quantitative writing. I don’t want to be a crappy writer. I don’t have to be.
The higher the quality, the higher the pay. So I vote for quality—starting now.
August 16th, 2010 at 9:06 am
Yeah, your write about writing more often. Here lately I haven’t been doing that to much. Very nice article though.
August 16th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
Great tips! I agree on making a list when you are inspired. However, the problem with that is that my list just keeps growing…and growing. Maybe that is a sign that I need to write more? Thanks for this great article.
August 16th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
I like to write but I do want to get better so I am writing more and more.

I am late commenting on this article, most people have said what I needed to say. Quality and quantity will always be a tight rope of a journey! Great work. LB
August 17th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Fantastic article. For some reason it takes me alot of time to write an article.
My goal is 450 articles ny December 31.
August 17th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Wow! Such a nice article. You have enlightened me on a lot of things… especially how to earn off the articles I wirte.
August 17th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
A well thought out article. You are right. The writing is not always the hardest part. For some of us it may be finding the
time. I write whenever I can.
August 17th, 2010 at 3:30 pm
Quantity is King. But we should still get paid more for what we do.
August 17th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
I agree, Leo – that’s why I’m proud to have participated in the recent program that gives me 10% more revenue!
August 17th, 2010 at 10:57 pm
