A personal article about writing for money.
I wonder why some people write. Not that I think there is anything wrong with their style or anything. I have just been reading lots of articles and blogs about never giving up. My favourite quote is ‘Those who quit never win, those who win never quit’. I don’t recall where that quote is from, but it is very true.
I have achieved my weekly goals with regards to writing. Though that should make me feel elated, it made me feel numb. I wondered what I was going to do with myself with nothing to do.
Don’t get me wrong, I have an entire novel to write, and some short stories, and more articles for Triond.
I will admit that I signed up to Triond to make some pennies. And that is all I am making. My partner is still on my case to get a ‘proper job’. I am on my case to get the words down and out there trying to sell them. Anyone who comes to Triond to earn a living will be quickly brought back down to earth.
I am not saying don’t use Triond, nor am I saying that you should give up writing. I have been trying to earn a living for many years from writing with no success at all. You may think I am silly and should just give up. I think I have lacked success because I was writing for other people and not for myself. Writing should be a pleasure, even when you have landed that book deal. I will continue to write, as should you, for pleasure. I will write what I want to write then find the market. But as regards to my quote at the beginning, if I quit, I will never be successful.
So write away. But write because you want to. You never know, you could make a living from Triond, but don’t bet on it. Writing for money is hard. That is why you have to want to write.
Good Luck!

You’re right – we shouldn’t give up just because it’s not easy.
