Why is Poetry Dead? Oh Sweet Poetry, Why?!

The simple answers are yes…And we would like to think to be able to bring it back.

Poetry now seems like the most useless writing style on earth. Why? Free form poetry was it’s death. Many teens and even adults wrote poetry with no pattern or structure; some of it was great, some was awful. Since everyone and their sister writes poetry with no form or structure and takes five minutes on each poem, people often generalize poetry as being a pitiful excuse for writing.
I believe any form of poetry can be amazing, even free form poetry where you can’t even tell it’s a poem until you think about it. The thing I don’t like is when people make a horrible rhyming scheme and can’t follow their own pattern. Sure there may be some wonderful poems out there by the simple person, but all I can say is they’re not going to be found. People don’t enjoy reading poetry because some of the poetry out there is honestly crap. People either have no form and write unclear, or they are slaves to their rhyming scheme and make a wonderful poem horrible. Of course there are no guide lines in free form poetry, but that doesn’t mean you can misspell words, not use grammar, and ramble on about nothing.
The only way to make any good use from poetry is to write an actual book like in the good old days. If you can get published as a poet, then maybe more people will take you seriously, but until then, you just have to hope people can sort through the crud to find some nice writes.

Also, in no way am I saying some people shouldn’t be aloud to put their poetry (no matter how bad) where ever they want it, I’m just saying those people should just proofread it, and make sure it makes sense before giving a whole writing style a bad name.

As a final word, I would like to say all poets have the ability to be great, but it also takes time and inspiration.
