Why Choosing a Writing Site is Like Choosing a Hairdresser

When choosing a writing site you feel comfortable with, there are many aspects to consider. Choosing a wting site is a little like choosing a hairdresser.

There are some things in life that just happen and others that need considerable thought put into them before making a decision. Choosing a hairdresser is one thing that most people take time over, considering all the aspects of a trip to the hairdresser that are involved. Choosing a site for which you feel comfortable writing has many similarities to choosing a hairdresser.

First of all, when considering either a writing site or a hairdresser, you look around. You search for examples of good end products that you admire, then ask others whose advice you respect for their opinions. It is important to spend time looking into the product before you choose to commit to it. After all, your online writing is on display to the world as much as, if not more than, your  stylish head of hair. It is important to visit first, deciding whether the appearance of the site or salon and the end products displayed are to your liking.

Having decided to sign up with a site, or make an appointment with a hairdresser, does not mean you are committing for life. You need to feel free to sample the services offered for a while, before deciding this is the place you really want to be. With any writing site it is important to look into the services offered and try them out to see if they live up to your expectations. A hairdressers services are usually openly on display and give you a clear idea of what to expect. This is not always the case with writing sites. Sometimes they promise more than they can deliver, or their quality control is rather haphazard.

Writers may think they work on their own, but an important part of any writing site is the people involved. When choosing a hairdresser you look for one that not only has the skill to cut your hair to perfection, but you need to feel comfortable spending a chunk of your time with that person. It is the same on writing sites. The success of your writing, especially in the beginning stages, can be a result of the people with whom you choose to interact. If you don’t feel comfortable communicating with the people whose work appears on the site, you need to question whether that is really the best place for you.

The skill of the people who write for the site is also important. You may be writing the best work that has ever been seen online, but if it is nestled amongst inadequate writing from people with limited skills, you will be disadvantaged. Like with hairdressing, all writers need to serve an apprenticeship, to learn from others and gain experience and expertise. It is expected that the hairdressing apprentice will improve with time. Likewise, writers should expect the skills of those they share the writing site with to improve their writing skills over time.

Money is always important, no matter how little of it there is. At the hairdressers, one hopes to get the best service for the most competitive price. Quality service often costs more. Quality surroundings are nice, but shouldn’t affect the price of the haircut. Likewise, look for writing sites that offer quality service over quality online appearance. Appearance and surroundings of the place you spend your time do make an impact, but should only be part of the decision making process. You, along with your readers, want to feel you’re getting value for money. Payment systems need to be straight forward, clear enough to be understood. You need to know what to expect and when to expect it right from the beginning.

No one writing site is the answer. What may be perfect for one writer is deemed a disaster by another. If you want to succeed with writing take time to explore a variety of sites. Become familiar with the options available and the services offered. Find out whether you may feel comfortable being part of the site. Then, just as you do with a hairdresser, if after trialling, you find the site doesn’t live up to expectations, move on. There are plenty of sites to choose from.

Good advice Val. I have tried a lot of sites and will continue but the ones I stick with are the ones where I feel the comfortable.

Odd, but I never thought of Triond as a service provider, but now that you mention it, it is a bit like choosing a massage therapist or a hairdresser. You do have to be comfortable with the surroundings. I have also checked out a few sites, but Triond feels like home. Good article.

I guess, Jimmy Shilaho just scanned your article (pertaining to his comment) =)

Anyway, I agree with you. “No one writing site is perfect”. Triond for example, is a good writing site with a supportive community. The downside is the cheap pay. Factoidz is a great site to write, better income but with not much room to maneuver esp. when you are the type who likes to give your opinion.

Moving on, and coming back. When you get tired of the other, you move back and forth.

Very interesting thoughts, Val. I don’t think I have done much shopping around for writing sites. I liked Triond from the start and have stuck by it.

Same as Christine, I will either stuck with Triond or quit online writing totally.
Very good thoughts you have shared with us, Val, hope you continue to write in Triond.

Good article, good comparison. Though, I never really put any thought into choosing hairdresses. Haha, as long as that person can shorten my hair and it does not cost much, I do not really care…
