How to get on writing when no idea comes out.

I remember the time when I was down and out and feeling so low (just like the lines of a song). Those were the days when I have just completed college and I have no money left on my pocket that I have some borrowed amount to pay for my boarding house but nothing left to pay for food and fare. I managed to walk the distance from Villamor Air Base in Pasay (Philippines) to Makati and pass time thinking at Greenbelt Park seated on a bench with a pen and paper writing whatever comes to mind. That area along Makati was the most prominent spot to relax and there were still no high rise buildings around as it is now. I will watch people passing by like a beggar with the sole exception that I wasn’t dressed like one and I will try my best to write the experience in a manner that will make me feel inspired despite being so desperate. Thanks for some inner instincts that kept me thriving not to resort to snatch somebody’s wallet and run with it.
Today being the first day of November I would have been obliged to come up with some writing but I find it hard to concentrate on starting out. My laptop keeps on restarting and I’m so embarrassed to get back to where I have begun. Then I recall my lowly days back at those days as described on my first paragraph. I have a laptop computer to boast of as of the moment not merely a pen and paper but I have run out of ideas. I am sitting on a comfortable chair inside my rented flat somewhere in England far from that bench in Greenbelt Park way back in the past at home. I have work and certainly I have no worries except health issues beyond my knowing. Ironic as it may seem, during the time that I have only a pen and paper ( a writing implement of lesser technology) I have all ideas flowing out to write. Now I have everything on my fingertips (as a writer) but nothing left on my head. Have I forgotten something I should not? Of course I knew that I only have to let the situation pass as everyone must. Or if I could stand the cold outside at 10°C, I could find myself a promising bench on a park and catch some ideas.

A great idea is to take a notepad with you and blog whatever comes to mind. Look around and see what could interest you to write a story.

Great ideas come to those who ponder or just sit still on a bench and wait for inspiration to just blow by us in the wind. I think I was just inspired out of the blue and so can you. LOL

For someone who had no idea about what to write you gave a Jim-dandy description of your day on the park bench without pay for food or fare. I could use a little block like that from time to time.

Not a bad idea, what you have written.

I know what you mean, some days I feel flooded with ideas.. other days nothing.

Somehow when an idea is needed we can always find something interesting in our past to write about

I get a lot of ideas for my poetry from the Allpoetry site where the other writers post prompts of all sorts in the form of ‘contests’. I find that I can browse through the prompts of pictures, quotes, topics and word banks and usually find something that strikes a chord in me. Picture prompts and quotes are usually the most likely to spark my inspiration.

Sometimes it is just relaxing, like you mentioned on the bench, that can instigate an idea.

It does seem ironic, that now your needs are catered for you have writers block, but it did give you the inspiration for this very good piece. I hope the ideas start flowing soon. Perhaps you need to get outside with pen and paper again.

Love the way you think, Will. Sitting at a bench with pen and paper and just writing what comes to mind, I love that. Plus I prefer to use pen and paper over a pc or laptop anyways. You’re actually writing, you know…lol.

Write about what you are thinking about
If it’s thought provoking to you
It will be to someone else too
Just like mental block

You still wrote this piece though. I suggest that you close that laptop for a few days, get out the house and just live life for a few days. Inspiration can be hard to find, but we all like a traesure hunt!

And though you thought you had no inspiration, here you wrote a wonderful piece, inspiring with such a wonderful meaning! I think by remembering some of your past experiences and writing them you will find inspiration Will! Shut the laptop and take heed to your own words, there is nothing like a good old pen and piece of paper to sort you out, as you very well know. I always write with pen and paper, especially stories, pen and paper are two things I cannot live without.I feel it flows better on the paper then on a screen. And besides by actually writing with my hand it is almost able to keep up to my mind.lol

Have a cup of coffee or probably just get a rest or go out to see the nature.

Thanks, I really needed this. I am having a serious case of writer’s block.

Observation is definitely a great inspiration. Using the pad and pen can be a great start….when you get to your laptop or desktop, I find other details that come to mind while writing from the sketch pad….like a 2nd draft. I would be lost without the original notebook sketch for sure. It just helps shape the writing so much. Great article regarding the foundation process.
