If you write it, will they read it?

The late comedian Rodney Dangerfield make a career out of his shtick about “not getting any respect” and judging from the scarcity of comments and “likes” I have been getting since I started posting here nearly six months ago, I am starting to feel a little like Rodney Dangerfield.
I would just like to know what a guy has to do to get noticed around here?
I am surprised when I visit a site to vote and comment on one of my favorite writers here and see a plethora of votes and comments. I think to myself, “gee, how does he or she do it? What am I doing wrong?”
Promoting one’s writing is the name of the game at sites like Triond that’s for sure. It really is all about selling yourself and writing-even if it means spending hours commenting on people’s writing, some who will not return the favor, just to get your name out there for people to notice. It’s not, to paraphrase what Kevin Costner’s Ray Kinsella had to do in 1989’s Field of Dreams-”if you build it, he will come”-to “if you write it, they will read it” either. No, it is about how well you promote yourself and write about stuff that people are generally interested in.
I am no stranger to writing sites like Triond either. I spent a little over a year at This Is By Us, better known as TIBU (until it went under this past February) and was at the top of the writing pyramid as it were with what TIBU used to judge a writer’s merit, “goodness points” that one got by the number of views, votes, and comments he or she received for a post.
What’s most unfortunate is that much of what I have been writing is going unnoticed, at least judging from the few comments and votes I do get.
Maybe I am just not good at selling and promoting myself here. Maybe it has nothing to do with how well I write.
Maybe I just don’t get any respect.

Enjoyed your article. You have a great conversational style. Thanks for encouraging me as an ‘online writing virgin’. I’m really liking the “Field of Dreams” advice and intend to follow it. Look forward to reading more from you and please visit my site as well. I’d love to see my articles gain that ‘plethora of votes’ and comments of spoke of. For now I have just been inviting friends to check it. What it thrill it would be to hear from seasoned online writers.

I very much enjoyed your article and will be reading more! I am new to Triond, having only published two articles. Since the last article was published, I was accepted as a volunteer writer on a soap site. While it’s not exactly what I want to be writing, it is experience and any experience is better than none. Thanks for the encouragement!

Hi Papa Sparks,
Just hang in there. It takes time but readers will come. And they keep coming as your articles make their way around the Internet.
Using article widgets and feeds at your blogs also really helps.
And I saw this article title and was curious to read more so clicked on it. Well done.

Writing is only half the game here, promoting is the other half.

we all came to that point..especially in our earlier days here in Triond. i mean, I’m not used to promoting my site too..I had an account in stumbleupon when i was still a newbie but i know nothing there (jsut very little) and until now, i haven’t figured things out in that site. i just kept on writing coz i know one day, people will appreciate the things i write about:) Just like all of us here..Good luck to everyone! God bless!
