What to Do If All Your Content Disappears From The Web

This is a must apply back-up plan if things ever go wrong with websites we write for, whether it is Triond or some other website.

Today, I was reading a short e-book on Associated Content (AC). Too bad AC now only pays to its feature writers. International writers can no longer gain money through views. Which is bad because they paid on time and allowed you to republish old content.Plus the rate was higher and it got even higher as you became more involved.

Anyway, while I no longer can take advantage of AC (I hate US tax laws- they effect me- well all internationals- even when I am neither a resident nor a citizen), it reminded me that I still had all the views (and payments) I could get from both Triond and Factoidz. I went on to check my current earnings. When I logged on to my dashboard here , however, a nasty surprise was  waiting for me. My dashboard showed no articles and no earnings. And I have been writing here for many months, have published over 100 articles and at least make a couple of dollars every month. Where have all they gone? Refreshing, re-logging in and checking back later in a couple of minutes didn’t help either. In panic, I sent an email to triond. Before I got a reply however- in about an hour or more, I rechecked and everything was back in place. Which is great but this reminded me that it is always best to have a back-up plan. Internet is tricky and even the worst can happen to the best of the sites. Thankfully, this was a minor glitch but here is a counter plan if things ever go wrong:

1)      Obviously, contacting the site administrators and asking around in forums until your problem is solved is key.

2)      But suppose, something really major happened and there is no return. All your published work is gone. Of course, first get the frustration out of your system in the way that works work for you. Shout, swear, cry, work-out, rant…whatever it is that you need to relax, do it.

3)      Then check your computer files. Get a back-up for your every file. Save them on dvds, copy them to an external hard drive, print them out and e-mail them to yourself as attachments. There is a chance one thing or two might get harmed or lost, but at least one of these methods will save your writing for good.

4)      Feeling safe and secure? Good! Use your bookmarks. I am guessing you have bookmarked all other writing sites. Now, read the guidelines. Make sure you know how they feel about content you published before but it is not online anymore. Some of them will be willing to treat it as original and some won’t. At least you have Bukisa and Wikinut for republishing.  Also keep in mind that some online magazines don’t mind publishing your old content if it was only published in print and vice versa.

It’ll take work and effort but at least you will be able to cut out your losses. And who knows? With your current knowledge of writing markets, internet marketing, seo , traffic and beyond, you might even make much more money the second time around.

However, obviously we hope to never encounter the problem in the first place.
