What is Writing?

This is just a little piece I wrote on why writing is so important to us.

Writing is courage, the kind of courage that lets you express exactly how you are feeling, and lets you create something from virtually nothing. Why do you think we write on holiday cards for people? We lack the courage to say out loud how we feel about people on those special occasions, but writing gives us the courage to choose the words that really mean something, and write them down on that card. This is only one example of how writing helps us express our emotions, whether we are writing to someone or just in a private journal. Sometimes when we are down, and spoken words prevent us from asking for help, we turn to paper. We keep a journal, and tell it exactly how we feel as if it were a person, but we aren’t afraid to tell this person whatever we want, because paper doesn’t judge or interrupt. There isn’t a piece of writing as courageous as the journal entry.  Not all of us are brave enough to admit to our own feelings, but once we discover the journal, writing gives us the power to look deep into ourselves.

Writing gives us the freedom to create whatever eccentric settings and characters come to mind. The imaginative person can turn blank sheets of paper into a whole new world filled with suspense. One can lose themselves in writing a story. It lets us forget our problems for a while and pretend we are in a different life. When we learn how to create a story out of the blue, we by far, have improved our mind and soul. We can then entertain ourselves with merely our thoughts being written down. This is why writing appeals to so many of us. The freedom and courage it provides me with, makes is meaningful to me.
