Triond Forum: Proper Critique The Two Way Street

What is proper critique and what is not.

The common consensus between profession and amateur writers who appreciate the critiquing of their work is the ” two way street process”. Many people that I have noticed in the Triond forum hide under the guise of critiquing others work as a way to become the literary genius or ” know it all”. And some just to play juvenile games of name calling and bashing each other. Among themselves this bashing process may be fun, but to an outsider it appears as silliness and childish behavior. A person who really wants their work properly critiqued wants to be told the flaws in their work for improvements. And this is to be done as constructive criticism if it is wanted and appreciated for improvement. Telling someone that their writing is pure crap is destructive criticism, and just pure maliciousness, childish, and unprofessional as quoted by educators of the more finer educational writing institutions. I have never asked for critique on my work as I feel I have my own style. Knowing the climate of the Triond forum, I would not suggest anyone new to Triond to enter the forum for constructive criticism, expecting a two way street communication. In the forum I have heard quotes of ” get a thick skin” These people who demand this thickness of skin fail to realize that their skin would be tested in the process of a two way street approach. I feel constructive criticism is not of thick skin, but an offer from another writer who is willing to be vulnerable enough to look at the heart of their own work as well, and this if only wanted. Poems are about the expression of the soul, putting words in an arrangement to express, emotions, thoughts and feelings, beauty, love, remorse and sometimes anger. People who cannot find the balance of this and how they treat others with respect are in no way a judge of anyone. Setting yourself up as a judge to smirk and critique then being defensive of others opinions is a person with ego problems. This person would never be a fair participate on the two way street process. By professional writing standards unwanted criticism is rude behavior which only shows the character of the person who feels their opinion is superior which as stated above is pure egotism.

I agree with you; some people here claim to be highly intellectual individuals yet don’t seem to understand that the way you say something matters. You can tell someone that they need work in their writing without cursing and insulting them.

Too true!I believe that there should be some kind of of regulation against that.As for constuctive criticism many people are unable to give it properly in order to direct the person on the right path and others to be honest are unable to take this type of criticism because they feel it is an attack on their own character. But I believe the way to learn something that you are not great at is through constructive criticsim and the guidance of others, not by the belittlement of others who should know better just to make themselves feel bigger and better and I find it simply disgusting that people would do that espeically if a person truly is looking for help to better their writing! Great article, very enjoyable read! sorry for the lengthy comment.lol

I totally agree with you. It really is a shame that people choose to hurt others by being mean with their criticism.

You have certainly spoken the truth here. These guys play too much in a serious social writing WEB. We are professionals. The players are not. I have grown with this experience here at Triond. The public audience can be cruel. It is up to us not to let them break us so that we can grow and polish our writing as we grow. Who knows who will be famous one day! Thank you for sharing. TU

Every time I have visited the forums it seems filled with pages of useless chatter and worse so I don’t go there at all any more. It is just a part of Triond i don’t need or want.

I agree – I have often thought that a small group (five maybe) could agree to work together in improving each other’s work. This could then be characterised by trust, constructive feedback and mutuality. Anyone up for it?? PM me on Triond

I don’t frequent the Triond forum much because I find it to be quite off putting. It seems it’s not possible to have a constructive discussion on there. After a few good back-and-forth posts, the mean (or meanish, at least) banter starts.
