Whether you’re an expert writer or just a hobby writer, the same rule applies when it comes to content topic: user interest.
Now you can be the most knowledgeable person in your field, and still do poorly when it comes to visits and actual reads of your content. Why is that?
I remember some time ago, when I first started writing online I made the first mistake in choosing a topic: writing about making money online. This is the most “popular” topic amongst all newbie’s in the field, and a large percent of people actually start by “teaching” others how to make money online.
The second mistake I made was writing about SEO and making money online. Now, as you can see, I have evolved a bit from the newbie stage and got to how I was going to make money online… Needless to say, this is an overcrowded topic as well, like many others.
I could see no actual results from this type of topics, so I thought about going into the other extreme: a unique topic which only Wikipedia would cover. So I started writing about a single type of bacteria that most people don’t know or care about. Surely enough, I soon got to being among the top results in Google along with Wikipedia, but still haven’t got that many visits. I realized that the only people who actually read that post were specialized people in the field of biology.
There are two rules that came from these past experiences which could help other people as well as me:
Also, evergreen topics rule! The world keeps changing at a faster rate than it used to, and memes and phenomenon’s arise each day. Don’t be fooled by these trends. Once they reach the top interest level, they soon tend to nosedive into oblivion.
Write about topics that truly interest you, since it’s much easier and a bit more fun.

Absolutely correct!
As a German, my most successful articles are German cooking recipes and how to make Gluhwein. I don’t mind that… I just need to translate famous German recipes to English. It could be worse *lol*

It is true that if you want to write about the current “hot” topic, you had better do it quickly and get it out there. Nobody wants to read last week’s newspaper.
