Topic Suggestions

Several ideas that get the mind rolling and the ink flowing…

I often find myself struggling to think of something to write about. I worry, what will entertain the readers, what’s interesting, how many times can I write about potty training before losing my mind? With that frame of reference, I’ve decided to put into text some of the things I free-write about in order to get my brain away from groceries and the office and into its creative mode.

  • Pros and Cons of coffee in the morning. Is the jittery feeling and potential for spillage worth the boost? Why?
  • What would I take with me if I knew I would be alone on an island for a month?
  • One of my favorite methods is to listen to some sort of media and copy down the words that sound interesting to you. Then take those words and write something with them. Maybe it’s a poem, maybe a short story, maybe song lyrics… but you HAVE to use those words.
  • Write your obituary, with a twist! My life is pretty average (Good… but still average) so I put myself into different lives. World Explorer Me, Famous Zoologist Me, Old Cat Lady Me, etc. Not only entertaining, but you never know what you’ll learn about yourself while writing about your Fictional life!
  • Where do you want to go on vacation? Do you dream of island surrounded by crystal blue waters, or do you prefer chalets on snow-capped peaks? Write the scene that you see.
  • Write a letter to alien invaders that explains why Earth should be spared.
  • Write a letter to a friend or family member who is no longer a part of your life, tell them the things you wish you had when they were around.
  • Take a cue from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith and rewrite a classic adding flair through whatever captivates you. It doesn’t have to be a novel since this is only for creative purposes.
  • Imagine you found the keys to a safe deposit box and decided to look inside. Chronicle what you find and imagine the story behind the items.

Like I said, writers block is a thing that everyone experiences now and then. For some of us, it’s much more frequent. So utilize free writing with topic suggestions and see where your creative side takes you!
