Tips to Writing a Good Article

How to write a good article in order to increase readership.

Here are some tips on how to write a good article that I have learned from many places, including ETSY. These tips will help increase the number of views you receive by generating interest in your would be boring article. Following them are bound to get you more views and less attack by grammar Nazis.

INDENT! I can never emphasize how annoying it is to go look at an article and see a wall o text, or blocks of text separated by a single space! Not only does it look more formal, more people like indents in paragraphs because it makes it easier to read. Even the research paper in high school does this.

BULLETS are your friends! To get facts out there, it is easier to just bullet point them. That way it is easier for the reader to find them and actually read your article for more than 5 seconds. Putting all of your facts in text will not catch many peoples attention, you need to hook your reader in order to keep them coming for more, and have their friends, and friends, friends come too!

PICTURES! There’s nothing better than an eye-catching picture to attract viewers! Its like writing an article about fireworks and no pictures in it at all, not even YOU are going to read an article like that! So write an article and include reasonably sized (do not make it an 8 foot picture!) picture or pictures to make it more attracted to the eye.

CONTINUE! I have seen this many times with papers, they just drone on and on about the same things over and over again. They put in an article what I can put in a paragraph. And also, do not be redundant! If you have said it once, do not say it again until the conclusion! I have also read many papers here on triond that repeats the same thing 5 or 6 times in the article; the reader only needs to read it once! Unless it is a persuasive essay, and even then there are limits!

SPELLCHECK! It would be kind of embarrassing if you misspelled “rainbow” in an article about the weather. You want to say what you want to say and be a credible source at the same time! So try not to misspell, bash, name-call, use horrid grammar, “txt spk”, slang, or anything like that in a article unless you are writing that article for the purpose of sounding that way. No one wants to talk about the “weatha”.

LINKS! No, not the guy in the green tunic saving Zelda for the umpteenth time! When writing an article, try to include hyperlinks. Not only can this replace a works cited page at the end of the article, it also keeps viewers staying on your page longer. This also helps with credibility, nobody wants to read a works cited page, they want to just click and go for sources. Also, make sure you have links to some of your related articles on there too; this keeps viewers busy and keeps them from going to other sources. Make sure the links are activated; text links you cannot click on are completely useless.

QUESTIONS readers usually ask! Readers usually ask certain questions when searching for specific material. Like for raccoons, if a person was searching for raccoons information they would want would be:

  • How big is it
  • How tall is it
  • What colors are they
  • Where they live
  • How domestic can they be
  • Eating/sleeping habits
  • Myths and other facts
  • Anatomy

So there is a lot people would want to read on the raccoon, a bad article to write would be talking about what foods one would feed a raccoon in a domestic environment. If you encompass all of this information, more viewers will read your articles. Just limiting it to one or two questions limits your viewers, so expand your articles and you will expand your viewership!

Great tips, I try and do most of them but I definitely think I should add links to other relevant articles. Not only will I increase my own views (yay!) but I actually do write some stuff that leads on from each other or at least ties in , so it would make sense really!

I agree with all your points. I put pictures in many of my posts, especially history articles. Pictures are always appealing, and putting links to related articles is always a good idea.
