Do you want to write great articles? Here is a guide for young writers who want to gain footing in the world of writing. The tips addressed may also be useful to any writer who feels the need to improve his writing and gain more audience. Sharpen your pencil and lets write on.
Sometimes young writers ask me how one can write great articles or great stories or great poetry. These writers want more views, they want more readership, and they want an audience that appreciates. I may not be an authority when it comes to writing but I know a great article or piece of writing when I come across one. Whatever genre one chooses, the following tips can greatly help.
- Know your language – You can’t write great articles minus language. Do you know English, Spanish or Bengali? Write in the language you best understand. The spell check provided by most browsers and office programs isn’t enough. Readers get incensed when they come across poor sentence construction, glaring spelling mistakes, and easily discernible grammar challenges. Just write in your language!
- Know your audience – Good writers write with a particular audience in mind. They don’t just put words onto paper; they don’t just scribble what comes to mind. They plan their writing with a specific audience in mind. There is no such thing like a general audience. Target a particular audience first and if your work appeals to other people as well, it will be an added advantage.
- Know your subject – I never write on rocket science because if I did it would be 100% research. You need to pick a topic you are well versed in and if not, you will be forced to fill in the missing link with very good research. Do not underestimate your reader. Among your readers are doctors, lawyers and cooks who know their trade so well that they will know it when you lie.
- Have a catchy title – Have you ever heard of the saying don’t judge a book by its cover? Well that person lied. If the cover is beautiful then be sure you will get readers and in this case, the cover is the title. Catchy titles attract readers but the work does not stop there. A title alone remains that – just a title. You need to write well so as to bring back your readers.
- Have subtitles and sections – Look at how this article is structured. The subtitle is ‘a guide for young writers’ while the tips are numbered as sections. Dividing an article into sections usually helps the reader know what the article is all about and may make him or her read it rather than when provided in block format.
- Pick on what sells – I know that you are an expert when it comes to short story writing. I am a novelist and short story writer too but very few readers seem to favor fiction. Keep your short stories for another day and concentrate on what sells: Money, health, and sex. You can write a great article on any topic but then the three I have provided will earn recognition for you and that is what you need so badly, isn’t it?
- Proofread your work – Never post an article or a story or a poem before going through and making sure it passes your test. Some writers are too lazy to read through their work and are lucky Triond publishes almost anything! Do not be one of them and hope to get away with it. All those established writers you see out there do proofread their writing, why should you be an exception?
- Avoid plagiarism – The mere fact that a particular article is doing well online does not give you the right to copy and paste it and pass it on for your own. Avoid temptation of this sort by trying to read and react on what you have read rather than attempting to say it another way or in the same way. Do not even seek to imitate fellow writers. Plagiarism is illegal and stinks!
- Quantity matters as much as quality – You can not write an article a month or a novel in 20 years in the name of quality. The more you write, the better you become at writing. Never let a day pass without writing something. Triond or some other site may reject it or fail to publish but then it builds up on your experience. Never say you lack time. We have 24 hours in a day. Find 1 hour at least for writing.
- Writing is not an easy ride – Last but not least, writing was never easy, is not easy and shall never be easy. I have always challenged those who find it hard to try digging trenches. We as writers have no excuse. We either must write well or be written off.

Thanks for writing this article. I’m hoping that it improves my writing.

Thanks so much for the great advice. You are among those few who are good in writing, yet accept those who are not professional in writing for someone like me. I have seen some great writers in Triond who have “warned” some Triond members not to add them if they are not professional writers, and I have no intention to add them at all, frankly. Though I write those poems and funny stuff which are also something that some people appreciate, but none of them is informative article, I simply don’t like to write anything which I am no good in. I have long decided to write in Triond as leisure, whenever I have something to write, the thought of being a writer never cross my mind.
Few days ago, I had the thought to write some ghost stories but simply can’t write anything out and have given up. However, I still continue to submit some poems or jokes each time I have the inspiration. That’s the only thing I can write at this moment.

Thanks for your comments. Star, I really think those who turn down younger writers are not great writers like you say, they are pretenders to the throne. Personally I like what you write so much for humor is part of writing. You must have read about Charles Dickens, he wasn’t better at serious subjects like Tolstoy and the rest, but he is read by many people for his humor, hope I haven’t been misunderstood again, I really like supporting my friends.

This was pretty interesting. You are definitely onto something here. I have never actually heard anybody have such an extensive list with detail to guide writers, new and old. I don’t consider myself the best of writers; in fact, I would say I am average at best, so I found this article very helpful. Thank you for the tips, it is quite motivational to keep writing. Nice article!

I agree with you on writing topics that sell – articles on money, health, and sex are mostly evergreen articles. The good ting about them is that they gain money and views month after month, year after year. Travel also sells as well, as people always look for ways to enjoy their vacations.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Thank you, thank you my friends, I really appreciate your comments. I have always been open to fresh ideas, keep them coming. Thanks.

Thank you so much! I’ve bookmarked this and I’ll definitely be referring back to this soon. I thought it sucked being a young writer since I get so easily intimidated by older successful writers. Thanks for this. It inspired me plenty. I’m definitely going to struggle with writing everyday as ideas don’t flow to me as quickly as they do others.
Thanks again!

You know what I think about this article? The less said the better because no aspiring writer is going to get any tip out of this piece. Do you mean to say that a fellow would write on a subjet on which he has nothing much to say ! Why do you give this as a point?
July 12th, 2010 at 1:47 am
good advices for newbie and oldie writers!
July 12th, 2010 at 4:07 am
Great tips! I especially agree that researching plays important role for every articles. There are too much writers out there who don’t spend enough time (if any) to research and gather reliable information for their information articles but still thought that their articles are good.

This is very interesting thanks for sharing you article Virility EX

I like this article, but I must state that writing is just a hobby for me and there are no options in my language to publish online, unless I pay for them.
So I do write in a foreign language, but I also write in my native language as well.To be honest: I lately found the courage to edit a draft I kept down for years and this is why I am not much active online for the moment.

Thank you for sharing this article. Personally, I try to follow most of the pointers above when writing because I know how frustrating a poorly written article can be to readers. I appreciate you having put the important issues to watch so simply. Thanks.
