If you have a desire to become a writer, you might not know exactly where you should begin. Depending on where you go for advice, you will hear all different things said, but the truest answer to the question of where you should begin is this: start writing!
If you have a desire to become a writer, you might not know exactly where you should begin. Depending on where you go for advice, you will hear all different things said, but the truest answer to the question of where you should begin is this: start writing!
In the old days, when a writer sat down to write, they could unplug their house phone and sit in front of their typewriter and write. If they needed to do research, they would visit the library later in the day and would peruse books until they found what they needed. Back then, it was no problem to write without being distracted; that is to say, back then, it was easy to “start writing”! Nowadays, however, distractions abound when it comes to writing, which is why knowing how to set the mood for writing is one of the biggest elements of getting started.
There are a few things you can do in order to eliminate distractions, but one of the toughest (and most important!) things is to write first thing in the morning. This can be especially difficult if you have to be at your job early in the morning, but the payoff is worth the sacrifice. If you go to bed just a couple hours earlier than you normally would, you will be able to get up a couple hours earlier in the morning and do your writing before your head gets cluttered with other things.
When you sit down to write, you also ought to turn off your cell phone in order to keep external distractions from invading your writing time. This should be easy to do if you are writing first thing in the morning, as you will probably not be missing much anyway!
And finally, when it is time to write, you need to realize that the internet is an enemy – and it is a dangerous one at that! Remind yourself that writing is a solo endeavor – and this means that (as difficult as it can be to do this) you should disable your internet before you write!
Once you do these things, you will be much closer to the way it was in the old days – when the phone could not distract a writer, and when research had to be done after the writing was finished!
