Time Restrictions = Writer’s Block

When life gets busy how to does one find the time to think creatively?

I have a confession to make.  I’ve only published two articles in the past month.  When I started here at Triond my goal was three articles a day for three to four days a week, in an effort to jump start my content.  And, I started out on track.  But, then life interfered.

Kids and school got extremely busy, the holidays came along, friends and family visits and parties to attend.  Next came the kids projects and the 4-H show.  With all of that I got behind on my day job, managing the house.  Coming up are birthday parties, doctors appointments, PTL meetings and the school Valentines party to plan.  I’m good at juggling my time but there is only so much time in a day.  It’s hard to write when I’m constantly on the go or involved with other projects.

When I do grab five minutes to sit at the Laptop and work on something my mind goes blank.  Or, maybe not blank. More like cluttered with millions of thoughts but none that correlate into a complete thought.

I’d like to offer ideas of how to break through this.  But, I’m actually searching for help myself.  I’ve read ‘work anyway’.  Um, that’s easy to say or ‘write’ but harder to do.  I mean, isn’t that what I’m trying to do?  If I didn’t have a mental block I would be working anyway.

Doodle.  Doodling is good, but how do you doodle on a laptop in a word program?  Doodling works better with a pen and paper.  Though, doodling is like artistic brain storming.  And, brain storming is good.  Isn’t that what they taught us to do in English class in school?

Some say to exercise.  A brisk walk around the block.  Do some jumping jacks.  Run or walk on the treadmill.  This is all great for stimulating the brain and body.  But again, my problem is a time issue.  When I find an extra ten to twenty minutes to pump something out I don’t have time to run laps around the living room.

Avoid interruptions.  As a household manager and parent to two active children there are going to be interruptions in my day.  I mean, I love writing and I’m trying to earn money but at this point in time writing is my part-time job. Life and managing a family is my full-time job.

So what do you do?  How to you oil the fingers and grease the ol’ brain?  How do you get your mind to focus in an effort to churn it, something, anything [of value] out?  Help a ‘blocked writer’ out, who’s only got five more minutes to spare.

Your priorities are at home. Writing is a part-time job, so please do not focus on the money. Focus on the joy of having friends you can share even two articles in a month. You are busy running your family life. It is OK. Writing time will came eventually…………….I have been publishing reviews for free for almost 10 years before getting paid………..Rome was not built in one day as they say………….patience is everything. Take care.

Always carry something around with you that you can use to put down words. Maybe a small notepad and inkpen. When you have time alone, write if nothing more than ideas for articles. If your response is, I don’t have time alone, well just think. Be creative. If you have to write when you are in the bathroom alone then do it then.
