Time Management Tips for Freelance Writers

Usually when you consider freelance writing as a full time career, people around you including your family and friends assume certain things. Out of these, the most common are that you spend whole day at your home in your night suit, and second thing is that “freelance writing” is just another way of saying that “I am unemployed”.

I have met many people, who think that freelance writing should be taken as a vocational or part time job, and can not bring any fruitful results like a fulltime job can. Well, for them I have to say that just by doing part time freelance writing job, that too by working just for 1 or 2 hours a day, I managed to earn around one fourth of the amount, my full time – 8 hours job gives to me. And, the full time job has many obligations too, to serve. I don’t find any good reason to not consider my this “part time job” over my full time job as a regular income source. I feel that freelance writing has got immense potential and possibilities to earn a lot, while staying at the comforts of your own work zone, and being your own boss.

However, just writing “anything” at any time will never fetch you enough money for living. You need to be organized enough to be a professional freelance writer and earn good income. Below are certain management tips, which can help you achieve this:

1) Divide your work zone from home: It is always advisable to have a dedicated work space – ideally a separate room at your home or a place away from your home, where you can simply concentrate on writing. The best and most feasible way is to have a separate study room (which comes with a door to close) in your home. Never use bedroom or drawing room to sit and write, being a couch potato. A feeling of professionalism in work comes from the surroundings you have.

2) Get out of your night suite: Of course, I don’t mean you to work without anything put on, but it is good to get dressed as if you are getting ready for your office work. As a matter of fact, you are actually doing the same. Just that the CEO and employee of your office are the same person, You!. Whenever you put on your regular work clothes, you get the perfect mind set for your writing job.

3) Set a regular time frame for your writing: The best thing about being a freelance writer is that you don’t have to spend time in commuting between your office and home. The best way to work on your freelancing writing projects, is to set up specific hours of work, just the way you have with your regular office job. This helps you stay focused on one thing, and you can achieve more in an organized way.

4) Never write, with your TV on: You are working, and that is what you should concentrate on – work. Discipline is absolutely needed to get the best out of your work as a freelance writer. You can obviously take occasional naps and rest to get better writing ideas and feel good too. The best way is to keep a couch in your “office”, where you can take a power nap in between your writing work.

5) Have your meals at proper time: Working as a freelance writer may become addicting and you may tend to skip your lunch and other necessary work in order to get done with a project. Freelance writing job is pretty isolated, and human beings are social animals. You need to get out to have your dose of social contact. It is always good to have lunch dates with your clients or other freelance writers you know in your network. This can even help you in expanding your writing business, and get more clients.

Freelance writing can be an amazingly successful career option, if you are a good writer and are punctual in meeting your deadlines. I hope the tips mentioned above can help you in growing more with your freelance writing career.
