Three Easy Tips to Avoid Plagiarism

Most of us have once committed an act of copying ones original work without his or her consent. Here’s a background and three tips to overcoming plagiarism.

With the ever evolving internet to ease up our lives, every thing seems to be one-click-of-a-button away. You do some researches or submissions and the information is quickly relayed on to our minds.

Due to this vast number of information, through the form of articles, video, audio and other files on the web, the urge or temptation to copy copyrighted and/or published material is a common doing of most students and/or even professionals.

Plagiarism is being done perhaps because some people don’t just want to waste time on what they will be writing or compose. And this is so common especially for students if they have to submit a report or project assignment. Another worst possible reason might be also many people aren’t just good writers and they want to make a name for themselves through proclaiming an original work even if it is not his/hers.

If you don’t want to be labeled as a plagiarist, here are my 3 simple tips.

  1. You must avoid the temptation. If you want to write something about your research/es, or if you want them to be published, you must write down the name of the source you’re with. After that, list down the main topics or significant details. If you have enough information, it is all up to you to expound your notes in your own words and opinions. By not looking at the copyrighted material, you are actually avoiding the temptation to plagiarize.
  2. Quotations. If you really need the information from a certain person, well, you can. But you have to restate it in your own words, too. If the idea doesn’t belong to you, use a phrase quoting to that person such as, “According to Elena Paterno” or “Quoting Mr. Norman Paela”, in order to give credit to your source.
  3. No matter what you are writing (articles, essays, and other material), if you a help from a source, you have to properly use citations. Use parenthesis containing the source’s name after the sentence or paragraph that you’ve written.

Plagiarism is a CRIME and must not be practiced by anyone.
