The Value of Writing

I enjoy writing and wanted to write about doing it.

Communication has been an essential and critical part of life for centuries.  Communication has happened and continues to happen in many forms; from scratching in the sand,  scratching on cave walls, using ink quell feather pens, paper and pen, computers and all sorts of current technology.

So writing, what does it do? It creates stories, passes information along and helps us mentally and emotionally understand each other.  It also relaxes…me.  I have realized my intense need to write, especially when personal issues and life in general causes me grief, pain and incredible joy.  In all of human emotions, writing expresses my emotions and can calm my emotional and mental state.  Why, I’m not sure, but I continue to ponder and depend on it to do that.

I do know that when I write, I feel a release from a painful situation and am able to think and function as if I have been medicated to relax, yet I maintain full mental capacity.  This is an interesting byproduct of writing for me, since I don’t and can’t drink, don’t smoke or eat to relax.  I enjoy writing and found I am good at it, at least from my schooldays essay grades.  Of course, I enjoy writing for this web site and being published with it.

Writing is equally wonderful for me when I am ecstatic about something.  This emotion turns out basic poems for me.  Little quips about how happy he made me, or my success in a situation.  Thankfulness-now there’s an emotion that churns out a poem or a basic essay.  It may be hard to get someone to listen about an incredibly wonderful success, but paper always listens, never criticizes and lets the bragging go on indefinitely if desired.

As a child, my favorite moments were curled up in a large enough chairs to curl up in- and I purposely made sure I was curled up- to read a favorite book.  That is how I read “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott.  I had heard the saying several times how relaxing and enjoyable it is to “curl up” with a good book.  So being the impressionable child, I did just that.  Sometimes I would read so fast I would skip through paragraphs and go back; when I realized I was skipping through huge story parts- don’t want to do that!

As well, writing can be financially lucrative.  There are very successful authors who entertain us with story series from many genres.  I think it is fascinating and wonderful that we can enjoy a fiction story as much as a “fiction” TV show.   So, my next goal is to develop my writing skill into whatever lucrative level I can reach.  This ties into having a job doing what I love best, which is also medicinal and therapeutic for the soul.  Although I love working at my current job, writing always tugs at my heart to keep at it.

So this little ditty about writing is to share my positive experience with writing, since I think that writing is good for the soul.  It is therapeutic, can have medicinal effects, is fun to be creative with and can be shared with everyone.  I wish and hope that everyone can appreciate writing and if they think they have the gift of writing, try it. You may surprise yourself with the talent and gift you may not know you have.
