The Reasons, and Gratifications of Writing

About some of the reasons why people write and the joys they derive from it.

Ever experienced the delight that writing brings; the rapturous frenzy that often accompanies the conception of a piece of writing, the earnest dedication with which the words are poured on paper, the ineffable gratification that overwhelms one when its object is fulfilled, and the insatiable desire to experience it again and again. It’s a truly profound joy and comfort that can gladden the soul in its gloomy moments and soothe it at distressing periods. What’s more, it can be attained via various outlets. There’s the elation of narrating a joyous experience to one who didn’t share the experience, so they can savour some parts of it as well — in truth, an articulate narrative can make some imaginative folks feel like they were really there. Many find succour in the translation of their pains and woes to paper; the profound miseries that are sometimes unutterable to, or unheard by those around, can yet find a kindred spirit who will respond in kind with soothing kind words when it’s written. Writing also helps to appease that compelling urge to share some discovery that the sense of sight or the intelligence of insight has just made; so that other people may learn from it; also, to chronicle the various impediments, trials, and pain that one has encountered on the road to some physical or spiritual advancement and achievement, so that others who are enmeshed in similar entanglements or wish to embark on the same journey can draw inspiration from it. Some others may wish to limn the surrealistic experience of a dream, to see the kind of response it elicits or if other people have had like experiences. Also, the peculiar feeling of nostalgia is a very strong one that often stimulates humans to record their yesteryears’ experiences so that others can share in them, or maybe even relate to them. Sometimes, some with profound knowledge or experience with respect to a particular subject write about it to others in the form of advices, so they can benefit from it. Finally, others write about the various events and happenings taking place in the present, with a view to informing others of the status-quo of their environment and their world at large. For whatever good reason(s) we chose to do it, writing is a glorious art that has done and will keep doing great good for mankind.
