The Old Firm Rivalry.
The Old Firm
The Old Firm is the name for a rivalry between 2 soccer teams in Glasgow, Scotland, the Rangers and the Celtics. But, the origin of the name is still unclear to people all around the world. The Old Firm is not just a light rivalry, there have been shootings, knife fights, and riots because of the rivalry. Imbedded in the rivalry is also a hate between two religions, Protestant and Catholic. As well as the religious problem, there are different political outlooks from each side, one being Loyalist and Republican.
There has only been one year in the history of The Old Firm that the Celtics and the Rangers did not play each other for the Scottish cup. This has caused the rivalry to escalate every year to a different level than before. For example, in 1980, fans of both sides fought a cruel battle on the field after a win for the Celtics. As well as this, in May of 1999, fans in the stands threw missiles at the players on the field. One of which hit the referee, causing the game to stop. There have also been killing that have been directly related to a game’s outcome, or the rivalry itself. There have also been reports that fights, some of which end with deaths, have been fought directly outside the field. So, all of these things show the intensity of the rivalry because there have been reports on so many problems between supporters.
The religious problems are very closely entwined with the rivalry because by saying what religion you are, you say what team you support. Each team has its religion, Celtics are Catholics, usually, and Rangers are Protestants, usually. For example, if you told me you were Catholic in Glasgow, I would know you are a Celtic fan. So, if I was a Rangers fan, I might fight with you there and then. This controversy has caused many problems for Glasgow. The main problem is street fights. Street fights normally end up happening in Glasgow over disputes caused by the religious rivalry. Therefore, religion has a great impact on The Old Firm rivalry.
Finally, there is the political aspect of the rivalry, and although the political aspect is there, it is not as big of a problem. Normally, Celtic fans are republicans and Ranger fans are loyalists But this does not really make the rivalry any worse.
In conclusion, The Old Firm rivalry is not only soccer but also the hate between political parties and religious groups.
