Here is a fun way to come up with zany characters for your next fiction work.
The Great Character Creation Game
Looking for a few characters for your new short story, novella, or novel? Then look no further than some of the characters in real life. They could be celebrities in public view or high profile individuals in your city. Just take two individual names and morph them into a single character. Mix up or create attributes, good or bad, from their style, occupation, musings, etcetera to formulate a unique personality. Let’s give the great character creation game a try.
Fred Barnes (a conservative columnist, pundit, and talking head) +PLUS+ Bill Kristol (a neo-conservative editor of The Weekly Standard).
= Barnes Kristol. A wealthy communications mogul, he is currently buying up both digital and print media properties in an attempt to accumulate a vast media empire.
Let’s combine Presidents #43 and #44 and we get Barrack O’Bush.
A chain-smoking scion of a wealthy beer family, he knows how to brew beer. Chased out of the family beer business for insubordination, he now takes up residence in lower Manhattan. He runs his own private equity fund and has begun to assemble a group of small microbreweries and craft beers. He now holds the rights to Billy Beer.
Joe Kristufek (a solid Arlington Park horse racing handicapper) +PLUS+ Ron Uchman (an equally good handicapper that covers both Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Track, both in Chicago).
= Uchman Kristufek. A Central European born American who makes his money as a professional handicapper. Made a small killing on the Kentucky Derby in 2005 when Giacomo won it. Placed a $100 straight trifecta on Giacomo, Closing Argument, and Afleet Alex. He wears round eyeglasses and smokes cigarettes through a cigarette holder. Is found of saying, “Put a hundred on it, my friend”.

Nancy Pelosi (current speaker of the US House of Representatives) +PLUS+ Harry Reid (current US Senate Majority Leader)
= Reid Pelosi. A Las Vegas casino owner struggling to make it given the current economic climate.
Richard Cheney (former Vice-President of the United States) +PLUS+ Ted Nugent (One of the best rock music artists around).
= Cheney Nugent. A gregarious, highly intelligent host of a hunting show. Promotes an award winning education video on the proper use and care of firearms.
Paris Hilton (Heir to the Hilton Hotel fortune and socialite). +PLUS+
Heather Locklear (gorgeous actress).
= Hiltoni Locklear. Her friends call her Hilly. Wealthy Baroness who owns a chain of hotels and resorts in California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Lives in Beverly Hills and is frequently talked about as a potential Libertarian candidate for Governor of California.
Now that is fun and interesting. Not only could these characters stand-out in your next fictional work, but part of the fun is creating them. It really gets the creative juices flowing. Try this game at your next dinner party, cocktail party or get together you will have lots of fun and may even make some memorable characters for use later on.
Feel free to incorporate any of these characters in your next work. Just be sure to drop me a note in the comment section. As always, have fun writing.
