If you’re writing to newspapers or magazines – the quickest way to print is undoubtedly via short articles, fillers and readers’ letters. This method can also be applied to online writing.

These must be written to conform to the style of the newspaper or magazine to which you intend to submit but if you are eager to have something published, these are the areas on which to concentrate such as:
Anniversaries of the birth or death of famous people or of events in the past are the source of saleable articles to a wide range of magazines and newspapers. They must be properly researched, accurate and well-written, which goes without saying. The writer who is first in submitting a subject should be virtually certain of a sale with an anniversary article tailored to the right market, of the correct length and style and with some fresh material in it, which has not been flogged to death by all the other published material on that anniversary.
Editors like to receive letters from readers, even when the letters are critical of what has been printed. It reassures editors that some one out there is reading the publication. Consequently, many journals pay for the letters they print. To the alert freelance and online writers such letters can be an additional source of income.
Letters to the editors should be kept short. They rarely exceed one-hundred fifty words and they often shorter than that. What counts is the idea and the forcefulness with which it is argued. A large number of weekly and monthly magazines aside daily newspapers are keen to receive controversial letters and pay for them. Of course, there are also weekly and monthly magazines and newspapers that do not pay.
