A short article on the use of hypnotic writing.
Have you ever started to read a book, and you’ve found it very difficult to put down? Do you find yourself saying “I’ll just read one more chapter…”, and then before you know it, you’ve read the whole book in one sitting?
If so, you have probably been hypnotised, but not realised!
So what exactly is hypnotic writing? Hypnotic writing is the use of simple, but very descriptive words which allows any form of text to flow freely. The more descriptive, and simple the writing, the more effective the hypnotic effect is. This is because the brain will start to “paint” images in your mind, and before you know it, you have been absorbed into the story.
Many writers will try and use clever and overly complicated words to describe a scene within their book. Unfortunately, what they do not realise, is this mostly has a counter-productive effect for the reader. Have you ever been reading a paragraph, and an unknown word has been thrown into the story? If the reader does not know what the word means, it distracts the mind from the storyline – and most people will then put their book down, to get a dictionary to look up what the word means! Complicated words are the equivalent of mind obstacles – they simply get in the way of the storyline.
So the secret of successful hypnotic writing, is to keep it simple, and use everyday words that people will understand.
There are several authors who have written books on the art of hypnotic writing, but probably the most famous is Joe Vitale.
You can purchase many of Joe’s books on hypnotic writing from most good bookstores, but if you would like further details, please visit Joe’s website:

Great Article, I had often wondered what hypnotic writing was before but I didn’t feel like going to get a dictionary in order to look it up. Luckily I came across this article:).

“hypnotised but not realised” Haha, I like that. I also liked reading the article. I believe in this as well when writing my short stories.
Keep it simple, but interesting – that’s the key!

Can we get ourselves kind of auto-hypnotized while writing?

Great article. Hypnotic writing is just what J.K.Rowling uses in Harry Potter, that’s why I can’t put it down…
