The art of hand written letters
There was a time when a magical romance existed between a blank page and a pen as the writer wrote down his or her feelings to his or her beloved who would be expectantly waiting for the post man every day.
Such special letters are now replaced by easier, faster, and cheaper emails and SMSs which even though convenient do not bring the same pleasure to the recipient .E-mail is obviously much faster than ‘snail mail’. This means that information can be exchanged much more quickly and the writing has become a lot more informal as a result.
“The joy of expressing one’s thoughts on paper, posting it, and waiting for the response or the joy one felt when the postman handed over a letter with a teasing smile, or the disappointment when the postman didn’t turn up or came empty handed,” said a freelancer, “Those striking moments were all worth it.”
According to some sources one of the reasons for the decline in the letter writing trend is because most people today use computers and mobiles for sending or writing mails. And these writing mails through our emails and texting messages through mobiles do not bring the same thrill and excitement that receiving a letter used to bring.
A majority of youths interviewed said that e-mail and SMS are much more convenient than hand written letters since they are quick, cheap and fast. An e-mail is an ideal an ideal format for quick messages and reminders. However, for real communication, there is no substitute for hand written letter. Even though Face book and Skype have the advantage of being able to show photos, videos and games, yet nothing can replace the joy of receiving and opening a nicely packed and carefully written letter from the people that you care about the most.
