People come up to us writers and ask us why we write. And we blatantly feed those suckers every far fetched lie about having to and being on missions and having spirits whisper in our ear. And that is fine. We’re in the make-believe business and there’s no reason to stop at any point. But just between us, here are the ten real reasons why we write.
- Your entire life gets purpose and meaning. From your first cup of coffee in the morning to your whiny neighbor to the uppity spouse who took your children and all your money: you live, you write!
- If 5% of all people write, there are 20 readers out there yearning for your prose.
- You get to be wonderfully eccentric, you alone in the corner of that single’s bar, sitting frozen in mid-thought while your dazy gaze factually pierces through the heart and intent of every patron.
- You get to invent and use new words, like toldy or sipquentive, because nobody dares to think that you, a known writer, didn’t know the right one for the occasion.
- You don’t have to talk to anybody when you briskly frown and land a pen motionless on a piece of paper.
- Great pick-up lines:
- What you writing, hey (swoon swoon)?
- Actually, I’m writing about you…
- Or:
- What you writing hey?
- I’m writing a book. Wanna be in it?
- Great ways to repel ugly suitors in a bar:
- And, hey, what do you do (wink wink)?
- I’m a writer. Keep talking. I need a complete jackass for a story I’m working on.
- You get to really feel one with people like Emily Bronte and Van Gogh and all those.
- You get to vent haughty opinions about anybody who is more successful than you.
- You get paid insane amounts of cash for doing something that you wish you could stop.

I really liked this piece. Although, I haven’t made the connection yet to point number 10.

Great read thanks. I think the words insane and money might go together for me but not in the context of earning a lot!LOL
loved this article.
I am so excited I have just ‘helped’ a friend in her shop and earned enough for a laptop to take out into the vineyards here in Cyprus and unblock my mind…again. Village wine and apricots might help. I feel at one with the goats.
