Ten Writer’s Essentials

Ten essentials that a writer should carry (or be armed with).

Writing is a very solitary occupation.  Some well-known writers have expressed that they enjoy book signings because they crave the social contact after very long periods of writing a book.  There are basic tools that are essential to writers, and an office is not one of them.  Every individual has its favorites, tailored to his/her own writing style which makes the process, a smooth one.  The following is a list of essentials for today’s writer.

  1. Paper and Pen, or a small notebook – Carry this in your pocket, or handbag, for those instances when inspiration strikes.  You might see a scene, hear a conversation, a good piece of information … anything can spark your muse, so be prepared.
  2. A mini netbook – Sometimes, you can’t stand being locked at home writing; sometimes you need fresh air to get your brain storming.  Carry your netbook with you, even when you travel.
  3. Dictionary/thesaurus (electronic or book) – Because most of the time the word beautiful just doesn’t do it.
  4. Coffee/soda or chocolate – many cups, many bars.
  5. Copy of Writer’s Market – It’s a writer’s bible.
  6. A Do Not Disturb sign.
  7. A library card (or internet access) – for research.
  8. A life outside the four walls – for more inspiration.
  9. A set of virtues:  Patience and determination.
  10. A good agent/critic.

Armed with these essentials, a writer is ready to create and avoid writer’s block and procrastination.  So, Happy Writing!
