Ten Ways to Overcome Writer’s Block

Ten (hopefully) useful ways of helping writers overcome writer’s block, because it’s a pain when that happens.

This article came about because I was really struggling to find something to write about. After thinking of all the ways I could inspire myself I came up with these and decided to write them down so I wouldn’t forget next time I had writers block. The fact that you’re here, reading this, might mean that you have writer’s block at the moment – if so, I hope I’ve been of some assistance!

  1. Phone a friend. They might have some interesting news that will inspire you.
  2. Channel-hop on the TV – if you have cable, there’s bound to be something inspirational amongst all the tat.
  3. Go for a walk and earwig. Listen in on a few conversations and jot down any interesting odd sentences.
  4. Look at bizarre book titles in the library – what ideas do they flag up for you?
  5. Listen to music, especially songs – the lyrics may give you some good ideas.
  6. What’s annoying you at the moment? Getting a good old rant down on paper could well turn into your next project.
  7. Read some biographies of real people on some “reunite” sites. Ideas for characters can grow from that.
  8. Read through old journals and notebooks and try to see your old ideas through new eyes and in the light of new experience.
  9. Visit an art gallery and see if any of the pictures tell a story for you.
  10. Write an article like this and follow your own advice!
