You can make money writing online at Helium, but patience is required.
The picture that you see below is a screen shot of my earnings at the online writing website Helium. Lifetime earnings are $10.03(been there 7 months-written 12 articles). Lifetime Donations are zero. Also, you will notice that I have an insufficient balance to request payment. Helium’s minimum balance for a payout is $25 which is in stark contrast with Triond who only expects a 50 cent balance for PayPal payments.
A couple of reasons Helium is profitable are:
1. They play on your heartstrings by ALWAYS giving a writer a chance to donate their assignment payments or their revenue share(similar to the pennies one gets for page views at Triond) to charity. This is much like the mass mail or beggar on the street corner mindset. A percentage of the people will respond to mass mailings or donate to the the bum on the street corner.
2. I suspect many Helium writers never reach the $25 dollar threshold which allows Helium to cash in on the AdSense, Kontrera, Chitika, etc. revenue earned by these writers for free.
These items are the downside to Helium, but the upside is they have a very fair anonymous article rating system where articles written to a particular title are ranked which in turn produces a writer rating. Writers with higher writing ratings earn more money. One can also make an extra 3 dollars a month for rating enough articles. Also, if you do not rate then you will not earn a penny at Helium. A writer has to have a 75% rating score in order to share in the revenue.

The reasons for ratings and making people visit other profiles and articles is to increase the engagement time of their site thus increase their rankings. I don’t know about Helium but this is the way the blog game is being played out

Helium doesn’t sound very profitable but it can still give you experience in publishing if you enjoy writing anyway.
