So You Need to Make an Author Photo for Your Book Cover

Many of you know that I have been working on getting a book out, I Laid an Egg on Aunt Ruth’s Head. Part of what I had to do was provide an author photo. This is my experience …

I’ve finished writing my new book, I Laid an Egg on Aunt Ruth’s Head, and it will be coming out soon.  There are lots of little details that needed to be handled in getting everything ready for the publisher, including providing a photo of the author (me).

In my brilliance, I thought it would be fun to provide a picture of a chicken on my head, keeping in the theme of the title of the book.  I’ve had countless chickens on my shoulders, but never had I tried to get one to sit on top of my head.

I recruited my sons to help with the endeavor, either holding the chickens or taking the photographs.  As you can see from the pics, this was a tough undertaking!

We made several attempts with this hen.  She just didn’t like being on top of my head!

The hen on my head is Amber.  She’s probably the friendliest, most down to earth of our fine feathered friends.  Even she was not sure about sitting on top of my head though.

Another attempt was made with this hen … it didn’t work.

Another attempt with Amber … she’s a blur as she says, “No way guys.”

And yet another attempt was made with Amber.

I also almost went with this pic.  Amber is actually sitting on my head with no human assistance.  Unfortunately, after all the work to make this happen, we decided that the background was a little too busy and distracting.  I was proud of Amber though.  Heck, I was proud of me!

Amber didn’t object as much to sitting on a hat, but as soon as we let go of her, she was off of there.

Look Ma, no hands!  This chicken sat inside an inverted hat, but it looks a little too silly for an author photo, even for a humorous book.

I abandoned the “on the head” approach and went for the shoulder, and this was much easier to manage.  I almost went with this picture, but the hen is just a bit blurry.

The actual author photo image is not in this article.  You’ll just have to look for it when the book comes out.  But hey, keep in mind that you can be creative with author photos!  I look forward to seeing yours soon.
