Considering the time constraints and the professional background of writers, it is always good to focus on niche writing.
Should you be a writer on your niche?

I agree with you that you have a passion for writing. But, you are also aware that your passion for writing forces you to spend considerable time in choosing a topic, searching for the relevant materials to write on it, edit your article, see that it passes the test of copy scape and free from plagiarism and finally you submit the article to your favorite web site or on your own web site.
You might have also realized by this time that you are more fluent and well versed when you write an article in a topic in which you have practical experience, in which you have academic qualifications and credentials, in which you have flair and natural flow.
Considering the most vital point that your ultimate goal of writing is to become a popular writer by getting published, to get recognized and then earn something out of your own writing, it is time to decide whether you should be a jack of all trades touching on all genres of writing or focus yourself on becoming a niche writer.
Then the real question that lies before you is, how long should you wait to achieve your cherished goals through your writing?
Consider your age. If you are a teen, then you need not worry about what you should write. You have a lot of time at your disposal. You can learn and earn a lot. Even you can be a jack of all trades and dwell on every genre of writing. But when you are married and preoccupied and you are in your 40s and 50s, definitely you need to consider a factor. How long should you toil in establishing yourself as a writer? How much time is at your disposal for your cherished goal of becoming a writer?
Again there are certain other questions also.Whether writing is your part time or full time work? Even assuming that you have chosen to write only as a part-time profession, then it connotes that you are preoccupied with yet another job to eke out your livelihood. It also means that you have time constraints and you have left with only a very little time for your passion and your cherished goal of becoming a writer.
Before taking a final decision of becoming a niche writer, you should also consider your childhood dreams, passions and interests and also analyze, to see if any particular sport or subject interests you more than any other thing.
Also see that your present job in which you are employed or the profession which you practice interests you more and has any scope for niche writing. If you are a doctor, it is a god sent opportunity of becoming a niche writer on health subjects or medical subjects; besides, there is more scope for specialization in medical subjects; for example if you are a dentist by profession, you can concentrate or specialize any one of the subjects like orthodontist or cosmetic surgery or advanced techniques of medical treatment for a dentist. Similarly, there is vast scope for a doctor specializing in heart surgery. Hence, if you are a doctor by profession, you have every reason and chance to become a specialized or niche writer in your subject. Apart from becoming an expert in your profession, you have to learn the nuances of writing.
Again if you are a lawyer, you have every reason to get elated of becoming a niche writer, because, the legal subject is very vast like an ocean and you have a storehouse of knowledge and information. But, in order to become a niche writer in legal subjects, your foremost duty is to equip yourself with adequate knowledge of your expertise, besides developing your skills of writing that is easy and intelligible to a common man or a layman.
If you are a teacher by profession, say in the subject of history or geography, you have plenty of scope to evolve as a niche writer. Similarly, if you are an English teacher, you can develop into a niche writer particularly in the genres of creative writing.
Above all the foremost reason that drives you into becoming a niche writer is that each and every international magazine, seeks and calls for and accepts submissions from you, based on your personal or professional expertise of your niche area only.
Therefore, to put it in nutshell, taking and considering all the above aspects into account, if you want to become an established writer within your lifetime and realize your cherished goal of becoming a published writer, it is better to focus on your niche area, than beating about the bush and frittering away the little time at your disposal.

I suppose if time is a constraint, then stick to what you know, but I like variety. A well composed piece.

Though, I’m more versed at poetry, situations demand that I do explore some avenues. Writing is not a profession for me but a vocation. I find peace each time i’ve finished something whether it’s a poem, FYI post or even Religious articles.
