A look at the many different reasons why people write and what they hope to achieve from their writing.
Different aspirations from writing
During the time that I have spent writing, I have noticed that people have many different reasons for writing and many equally different aspirations and expectations about what they hope to achieve from their writing. Having read many other people’s articles about writing and why they write, as well as the comments made by other on their articles, I have also noticed that these reasons often change over a period of time. This is the category that I fall into. Here are some of the reasons why people write on various writing sites.
- To share knowledge
Many people are knowledgeable in specific areas and feel the need to share this knowledge with others.
- For the love of writing
Some people just love to write. They get a real sense of achievement from sitting down, writing an article about a topic they are passionate about and then seeing it in print. They also enjoy the knowledge that other people have read their articles and get a thrill from people liking and commenting on their work.
- Boredom
Sometimes people write when they are bored. They have nothing to do of an evening, so they will sit down and write an article for something to fill their time.
- To make money
People often want to make money from their writing. This can be divided into to separate categories of people. Firstly, those who want to make a bit of extra spending money through their writing. Secondly, those who wish to generate a full-time income from their writing.
- My reasons
I discovered Triond almost by accident. I had only recently finished my studies at the Open University. Having become used to working all day and then studying or writing assignments all night, I felt at a loss. I played around on the internet a little and found Triond. I thought that I might as well make use of the many assignments that I had written for my studies and submitted them to Triond. I made a few cents but nothing more. I then spent a period of time off work sick and submitted a few more articles. This was purely to fill my time and to give me something to use my brain for. I have a very active mind and found it quite hard going being off work. I then discovered some more writing sites, including Helium and Squidoo, and realised that I had the potential to earn a little extra cash. After winning a few competitions on Helium, I was soon making around $40 a month for my efforts. After discovering that I was pregnant with my third child, I begin to reassess my life and whether I can continue to work full time, look after three children and pay the associated childcare fees. I am now in the category of people who is trying to earn a living from writing. This has induced extra efforts on my part. I am writing for six different writing sited daily, making more effort towards promoting and linking my articles and I have also looked at other ways to earn money from home. I think over the past eighteen months this has meant that I have covered every category of writer!
