Publishing Industry Blogs

A brief overview of a few favorite blogs written by publishing professionals.

Every modern business uses the internet to promote and educate the public about their products, including the publishing industry. For writers, it can be confusing to find helpful blogs that are informative, entertaining and relatively consistent. While admittedly, all taste is relative and subjective there are a few blogs from publishing professionals that I think are particularly useful. The following represents a small sample of the blogs I check regularly.

Nathan Bransford is a literary agent with Curtis Brown LTD who also happens to be a published author. His blog is the first one I check every day. It provides a lot of industry information and he often provides his own blog round-up. If a particular part of the publishing industry has you curious, if there is a hot topic on the publishing scene that you should know about, chances are that Nathan Bransford has something about it on his blog or provides a link to that information. He’s also very funny, which in my view is a huge bonus.

The Rejectionist is a blog from the writing trenches and never fails to make salient points about the writing life with a huge dose of searing wit. This is one of those cases where the anonymity available on the internet is in use. The Rejectionist identifies as an assistant to a New York literary agent, but there is no indication about which one.

Colleen Lindsay’s blogs are legendary for their incisiveness and snark. While her posts are not made daily, you can make a pretty safe bet that when she does post, it is worth reading.

Moonrat’s Editorial Ass (as in, editorial assistant) blog is chock-full of useful discourse about writing. Honest and straightforward, it is also an engaging read that may open your eyes to some of your own writing foibles, which is something that every writer needs.

If you happen to be a novelist trying to get a bite on your manuscript, Query Shark is the blog for you. Query Shark focuses exclusively on the painstaking art of writing a good query for your book. An interesting feature of this blog is that you can participate, should you be brave enough, and send in your query letter for critique.

There are many other blogs out there which are as useful, entertaining and informative. What are some of your favorites?
