A large number of online writing sites are rip offs.
I’m writing for Triond because I’m writing what I want to write. Yeah, I’ll get a few pennies here and there and probably after a year can buy dinner. But the point is, I’m writing about what I want to write about. So Triond and Bukisa are fine sites to write what you want to write about.
Triond pays less but seems, somehow, to get more hits. And using all the social networking tools one has, one can get more hits than just posting and sitting back and seeing if anyone reads you.
Other sites offer upfront payments of a whopping $30.00, but the catch is, you write about what they want you to write about, according to their rules and regulations.
Now it is going to take me a couple of hours to research the life of William the Conqueror, the Japanese Navy, or the care and feeding of gerbils. After I do all this work, and I submit the article, I have to wait to see if they are going to use it. If they are, I’ll get my whopping Thirty Bucks. If they aren’t, I’ve wasted how many hours of my life researching topics I am not interested in.
As whomever is paying me is too cheap to hire someone they will have to pay real money, and feel that those of us on the Internet are so hungry we’ll work for peanuts, they get $300 worth of work for $30. Not bad.
Although those of us who write for Triond may do so as a hobby, may publish something that just occured to them about which they want to write, getting a few cents per hit is not as onerous, even if it takes us an hour or even two to organise our thoughts, because they are our thoughts.
If you are writing on line, don’t expect to make much money, but also, try not to allow yourself to be ripped off.
The point of copyright is also interesting, in that Triond leaves it to you, other sites buy the article, buy your copyright, and you might find yourself reading your article in some big publication where the ‘real’ writers take home thousands of dollars for a piece, but you’ve already gotten that huge $30.00. And you can’t complain. As you’ve sold the copyright for $30.00.
Something to think about

I joined a couple of them thinking I could write what moved me. I haven’t been back.
I think a Newbie might join, and start working like crazy, and think oh boy…big money..(compared to the $10 one can get a month from Triond. But the effort is quite a lot. And if one is turned down?
Good article

I believe it is going to get worse. I believe that more and more hard copy publications are going to appreciate ripping off those online and those who were the travel writer or whatever for that magazine are going to lose their jobs.

Nice job! Something to think about. I wish loving to write or loving to take photos was more financially rewarding, but at least I can share what I love whenever I want.
All the best! Jenna.

I feel the same Jenna. Why kill yourself writing about something you’re not interested in, doing a pile of research and finding out oh…John Brown did a better job so you did all that work FOR NOTHING. On Triond, something pops into my mind, I start writing, and Triond publishes it, and a few folks read it, and I can buy a pack of chewing gum.
