This is simply the method I use when I write.
First of all I use a program called yWriter5, its freeware and very usefull.
When writing I like to write the dialogue, then fill in who said what and with what inflection, then fill in discriptive detail. Step one is to figure out who is going to be in a particular “scene”, and what the conversation is going to be about, are they mad and yelling, or are they secretly discussing some nefarious plot.
One of the biggest pit falls for early writers is character personality. If all the characters in your book talk the same way and have the same “accent”, it makes differentiating the characters difficult for the reader. And if all the characters in your book act the same way, and are all do-gooders then thats just boring. Make some one have an OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), or give them a deep souther accent, or a sophisticated way of speaking, this gives the characters depth and allows the reader to relate better with the characters.
Step two is to fill in who said what. If you always use: he Said this, or she Said that, there is something wrong. Said is over-rated, and a good writer will not use it very often. Be creative!!!!!! Use things like: laughed the woman, the child whispered, the man snorted, the boy interupted. Nothing is wrong as long as you are able to convey the thought.
Step three is to fill in the discriptive detail. This is the part where you truly get to show your spirit and creativity. Discriptive detail will make or break a writer. If you read one of R.A. Salvatores books you will have an example of what it is to be a great discriptive writer. To be a good discriptive writer you need to seriously pay attention to detail, even the smallest ones. When you say: The man stood on the mountain, thats plain and dull and boring. What you should say: The small man stood on the windswept mountain, the cold chill biting at his face and hands. His long hair swayed wildly in the wind, adding to the majesty of his sudden appearance. Now thats better, but not great, obviously, as I am still learning. When you write about an object, think of all the small details of the object and discribe the details that make this object stand out.
Anyway I realy hope this was able to help somebody out there! As I learn more and become a better writer myself, I might be able to put up another helpfull post.
