Entering free writing competitions is a good way of getting noticed and a chance to earn money. Many published authors recommend this practice. This is a comprehensive list of competitions for end 2009 and 2010.
Many published authors use writing competitions as practice for their work, extending their portfolios and for earning money. There are cash prizes waiting to be won. Books, Laptops, writing courses and holidays are also out there for the lucky winners.
The competitions cover a vast selection of topics and the prizes vary. For the price of a postage stamp or the time it takes to click over and email attachment, it could be worth it for the writer of short stories, poetry, recipes and much more.
Practice makes perfect is an old saying with true meaning. Even if you do not win, there is a chance you could get a commendation or a free critique for your work. Showing a publisher or a literary agent that you have made a concerted effort to share your written words will err in your favour. If you enter twenty competitions that is twenty items you have written, keep them tidy and on file for future use.
By never entering a competition you will never know whether you are a winner or not. There is little point in saying you will never win if you don’t enter.
The important thing to remember is to follow the competition rules carefully. They are there for a reason and if not adhered to, can cost you the chance of being entered.
If you think you are not good enough, think again. Find the confidence hidden inside you and go for it.
The year 2010 is just around the corner, start planning your new writing schedule. Think positively and maybe you will achieve your goal of earning money through writing competitions. Someone has to win, why shouldn’t it be your story or poem that is the worthy winner of that sum of cash?

I write for money if anyone will pay me. I have had poems published in university magazines and religious magazines. I usualy paid more in postage fees than I was paid for my poetry but it certainly feels good to have your work accepted. Your article has good, helpful information.
