Is Writing Online Really Worth The Effort?

Will writing articles on the internet really pay off?

Writing online is a pain, in a sense. After publishing over 400 articles online, both on my own blogs and on revenue sharing article sites, I have only made around $250 for my efforts. That’s just a little over fifty cents per article.

While some sites like Triond have offered me a source of revenue that is pretty much passive, it takes way too much time and effort to create a whole web of articles that receive high volumes of traffic from both search engines and each other.

While I do have a number of referrals on sites like Bukisa and Triond, they do not really do much more then make a dime or so extra for me each month, and that isn’t enough to convince me that writing articles online is worth the effort.

Then again, making $250 over the course of six months isn’t that bad a deal for a grade nine student. True, some people are pulling in thousands of dollars in Adsense revenue, as well as having Paypal accounts on steroids, but they are older, have had professional writing experience, and also have had a lot more time to put into their accounts then I can, with sports, schoolwork and friends to deal with.

This is not to say that I’m going to quit writing online, it is rather just a perspective on the differences between how much I can earn and how much an adult can earn. Time is on my side though, I guess, because I’ve got a head start against the majority of my generation’s aspiring writers. I’ve gotten both creative and freelance writing published, and plan on writing much, much more.
