Is Found Poetry Plagiarism?

Just a little rant I thought I’d write down about how I feel toward the concept of Found Poetry.

Recently, in English class, my teacher taught the class about Found Poetry. Found Poetry is created by taking words from a passage and rearranging or adding little words such as of, or and. From my eyes, Found Poetry looks awfully like plagiarism because the poet isn’t thinking of new ideas, he’s just rearranging someone’s else and putting his name on it. There are many forms of poetry in the world that don’t rely on copying or making your work similar to pieces that have already been created. To conclude, I think that in order to make poetry, you need to make your own unique writing, instead of copying others work and “rearranging them.

It must be frustrating to be taught when you’re so self righteous. Get over your high school-ingrained fear of the plagiarism bogey-man. Copying is a natural part of the creation process, and it just might be possible to use meaningless words to change meter and meaning, and reflect a bit of your self, which is all any piece could ever hope to do.
