An interview with Ken Nathan about himself and his work.
Interview with Ken Nathan (Artist and Writer)
Ken Nathan is an artist and writer. He lives in Caernarfon, Wales with his second wife. he likes to do crosswords, watching unusual films, spending time with friends and family and his favourite food is the Italian cheesecake Tiramisu.
He was born in Newark in Nottinghamshire. His father was an RAF ground sergeant who hated camels with a vengeance and his mother has just been done for speeding at eighty seven years of age, impressive!
Hello ken, can you tell me a bit about yourself?
The ken you see now is a very different animal to what I used to be like. As a child I was, believe it or not, shy and introspective whereas now I just talk too much. I always had a sharp, active mind and I had a very keen desire to learn; I was poking my nose into things; I still am. There’s always been a dichotomy however, insofar as although I’ve been fascinated by the scientific approach, I’ve laid more trust in the spiritual and the abstract.
What would you say your work was about?
Well I would describe my work as being about the human condition. It’s about those things that make us human, our interactions, our emotions, our behaviour and those little quirks that make us unique.
Where dose your inspiration come from?
I get my inspiration from the people around me, I enjoy watching people and the things they do. I also get ideas from odd conversations I‘ve had.
When did you start painting?
I don’t remember ever not painting. I always drew as a child,I did a comic strip when I was ten quite a long one around seventy pages, about an alien overlord unfortunately I can’t remember any thing about the story.
You’re writing a book at the moment, can you tell me a bit about that?
Hmm, I think the writing style stems from my work as a painter it’s the result of several years writing and a life time of painting.
Ok, what is the story itself about?
The story itself is about a hapless rouge and his life upon discovery of an alarming lump on his genitals. It has a unique style with little or no description and a cast of unusual characters. It is a comedy, defiantly an adult comedy.
What advice would you give to artists or writers just starting out?
Don’t give up, there’s a brick wall you have to go through with your head and sometimes lucky breaks take years.
