Indian Publishing Scene is Very Promising!

In most of the western countries publishing scene is in severe turmoil but in India, the scene is different. Literary festivals and Book Fairs are a rage and new young authors are becoming Stars overnight.

INDIA is an English speaking country with a very young population. The young in India are following the same trends of the advanced western countries including their choice for fashion, Films music and the choice of Books.

At the present time the Indian Publishing scene is going through a real change. It’s the best period for growth which will continue in the future. The number of people learning the English language is growing at a rapid pace and its very fashionable to speak in English. There are a lot of publishers, writers, agents and literary festivals happening in India today. Ten years back there were hardly any Book fairs organised in India. The mushrooming of literary festivals in India is the new phenomena. The Indian trade publishing scene is only about a 20 year story whereas in the other English speaking countries it’s almost a century old.  India is a very young but immature market. Literary fiction is where all this started but now we have something called chick-lit and campus novels as far as commercial fiction is concerned. On the other hand, commercial non-fiction has tones of unexplored areas like narrative non-fiction. It should be understood here that the number of potential consumers is growing and the number of areas that writers can work is also growing. The novelty of the current writers and readers is that they no longer taking their cues from the west. The writers of today are making their own decisions and what is relevant to them and concentrating on what they enjoy writing or reading and this accounts for the huge success the commercial fiction writers are relishing. Digitising of books is the new area of growth for the writers in India but the percentage of e. book opportunities are very less now but will grow in the future.

We will see focus on diversity in Indian writing and there will no longer be literary publishing or commercial publishing.  New experiments with all kinds of genre one will get to see innovation in the retail end of the spectrum, both in on line and brick and mortal stores.
