I Write Like: The Writing Analyzer

What is ‘I Write Like’? What are its positives and negatives? This article seeks to discuss this writing analyzer.

‘I Write Like’ (http://iwl.me/) is a writing analyzer which tells people which author they write like. The process is pretty simple- you paste an extract of your writing into the text box provided and then click on the ‘Analyze’ button. And voila! You get the name of the author whose style of writing comes closest to yours. The name of the author comes in the form of a badge along with the corresponding html code which you can paste into your blogs. It is an interesting tool that has become quite well known in a very short time.

However, there are a few drawbacks too.

Firstly, in the current version (version 4) of the ‘I Write Like’ analyzer, there are only 50 authors in the database. So, many great authors are absent.

Secondly, their algorithm (which relies on certain aspects of the writing such as number of words in sentences, number of commas and semicolons, among other things) may not be entirely fool-proof.

Incidentally, when Margaret Atwood (whose name is in the database) put up a certain extract from her work for analyzing, the result showed…….Stephen King!

So it is best to treat the results from ‘I Write Like’ with a pinch of salt. More authors need to be included in the database to improve the results. There might be some improvements in the coming days. Although it may not always be accurate, ‘I Write Like’ is still a lot of fun to use. By the way,I got this article analyzed. With respect to this article, here’s my badge:

I write like

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

For some reason, the badge got distorted. The image shown here, does not really resemble the actual badge. To see what the badge actually looks like, follow this link: http://iwl.me/s/dc1b9fa8
