How to Rid of Writers Cramp

If you ever write longhand, you know what Writers Cramp is. If you know what writers cramp is, you know that when it strikes, you REALLY want to get rid of it.

Writer’s cramp is actually, in most circumstances, a muscle spasm that can cause severe pain. Here are a few simple ways to get rid of writer’s cramp.

  • Push your hand on the inside of your knee. Take the hand suffering from writer’s cramp and place it on the inside of your bent knee. Turn it a bit further around so that your palm is facing your calf. Then push, hard. Shake your hand out and, wa-la! No more writer’s cramp.
  • To prevent writer’s cramp, rest your wrist on something as you write. Use a small pillow or a couple washclothes or whatever you can use that’s about the right height. Just make sure that it doesn’t elevate your wrist too far, and make sure it’s soft. Place your wrist on your pillow and/or pillow-like object. Now, you can write like that and it will help to prevent writer’s cramp.
  • Use a heat pack. Heat really helps relieve the pain if it’s the muscle or tendon/ligament that hurts. If it’s the bone… well, you might have something a little more serious than writer’s cramp.
  • Relax your hand. Every half hour or so, relax your  hand open on the table for 5-10 minutes.
  • Keep your wrist straight. One of the reasons you get writer’s cramp is that your wrist is bent sharply or in an odd position for long periods of time. Try to keep your wrist straight while you write.

These are some of the most common ways to get rid of writer’s cramp. Of course, this is considering that you have already tried stretching your wrist and fingers out. That is, obviously, the easiest way to attempt to relieve the pain of writer’s cramp.
