Sitting at a desk staring at a blank sheet of paper isn’t going to get you anywhere. Instead, just forget about writing.
Inspiration is everywhere, whether you believe it or not. It is in the way people talk and walk, the way they smile, the tree across the street and the way it sways in the breeze, the bits of conversations you overhear, your favorite books and movies, images, sunsets, the ocean…it really is anywhere you look.
Imagine your trying to write a book. You don’t have any idea what you want to write about, but you’ve been sitting at your desk, wracking your brains for hours. The pile of crumpled papers is growing larger and larger and is beginning to take over the majority of your work space. Despite all the work you’ve put into starting a story, you have nothing to show for. What do you do?
You might be compelled to sit there and think until you manage to force a story idea. This might work in some circumstances, but there are much more efficient things you can do to get the creative juices flowing. I have a few different tricks up my sleeve, but you know what my favorite way to get rid of writers block is?
Forget about it. Forget about writing, forget about your dilemma. Go out in the backyard, or better yet, go to the park, or anywhere public.
You can look to nature for ideas, maybe you’ll end up writing a story about the rabbit that hops across your lawn, or maybe about the hawk you see high up in the air. Or, you can look to strangers. Watch them. Notice speech patterns, how they walk, their smiles. If you can, listen to their conversations.
Maybe nothing will come to you write away. Be patient. Or maybe, you’ll here a bit of a conversation that inspires you. Maybe the girl climbing the tree will give you a good idea for your main character, or maybe you’ll wonder about the girl who’s crying over there on the other side of the park. What’s the matter with her? Her story could be interesting.
What I’m getting at is that inspiration is everywhere. Look, listen, observe. Soon enough, something will come to you.
