How to Generate Topics for Your Articles

Having trouble finding enough topics to write about? Here are some tips on expanding your writing portfolio…

Although writing is fun and seems easy to do, it can often be very hard to come up with a suitable topic to write about. This usually happens when the writer has written about anything he loves and has nothing further to comment on that. The trick is to start writing about topics that do not generally interest you, but you do possess a certain amount of knowledge of. This article is the very example of this concept. I’m very interested in personal finance and human psychology. Since I’ve written pretty much everything I have to write about that for the time being, I’ve decided to write about something I know about, but don’t particularly enjoy as much as writing about other topics.

This can be quite hard to do for many writers. For instance, I couldn’t care for writing about dancing just one bit, but as a writer, I understand the necessity of doing so to expand my range of topics. This probably separates the amateur writers from the professional ones. The ability to write about topics you don’t enjoy with much enthusiasm. I’m not saying I consider myself a professional writer, not by far! But I’m starting to understand some of the aspects needed to become one.

The next step is finding as many topics as you can and evaluate your ability to write about them. Finding topics can be done everywhere, many times an idea will just pop up in your head. Always be sure to have a pen and paper with you to write all of them down. Eventually you’ll have a huge list with topics all generated by yourself. I was walking down the street with a colleague today and she went into a shop. Meanwhile I thought of writing about shopping behavior between men and women, consumerism, the effect of advertisement on consumers and restraining yourself from spending money each day. That’s 4 topics in 30 minutes without spending any effort!

Another way to find topics is searching the internet. Look for daily news, how to’s, or just Google for “writing topics”. The downside of this method is that it will generate enormous amounts of topics you won’t be able to write about. Therefore I’d always recommend finding topics in your everyday life as explained above.

I hope that, by reading this you’ll get more into the habit of creating writing topics in your everyday life. Have fun!
